Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter died at her home in Plains, Georgia on November 19, the Carter Center said in a statement.
Former President Jimmy Carter said: "Rosalynn has been with me in every job I have ever done. She has been there for me and encouraged me when I needed her. As long as Rosalynn was in this world, I always knew someone loved and supported me."
Rosalynn lost her memory in May and her family decided to care for her at home in her final days. Meanwhile, former President Carter has also been cared for at home since February after several hospital treatments.
During her time as First Lady of the United States, Rosalynn worked tirelessly to promote mental health care and women's rights.
Rosalynn Carter’s most lasting personal legacy is her efforts to reduce stigma around people with mental illness and her fight for equality and access to mental health treatment. She also dedicated her time to the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Care at her alma mater, Georgia Southwestern State University, to help people with disabilities and illnesses.
After leaving the White House, former President Carter and his wife continued to travel around the world and do charity work. In 2002, Mr. Carter won the Nobel Peace Prize.
