After being operated on twice by doctors at Hue Central Hospital and receiving intensive pediatric treatment for 39 days, the baby is now breastfeeding well and gaining weight.
On the morning of August 1, information from Hue Central Hospital said that doctors from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the unit's Pediatric Center had just successfully treated and discharged a case of a newborn with small intestine torsion due to internal hernia through a natural defect in the mesentery with meconium ileus.
This is a rare disease in newborns. After two surgeries and intensive pediatric treatment for 39 days, the baby is now breastfeeding well and gaining weight.
Before birth, the pregnant woman showed signs of fetal distress and the fetus moved less.
Ultrasound results showed that the fetus had a dilated stomach and colon, suggesting a diagnosis of fetal peritonitis and gastrointestinal malformations.
Immediately afterwards, the pregnant woman was scheduled for a cesarean section when the gestational age reached 34 weeks and 4 days.
The newborn was born prematurely, weighing only 2,100g. The baby groaned, had pale abdominal skin, positive abdominal wall reflexes, and had a hard abdomen.
Immediately afterwards, the child was transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for intensive treatment.
After performing timely clinical tests and multidisciplinary consultation with the Department of Diagnostic Imaging and the Department of Pediatric Surgery - Abdominal Emergency, the doctors diagnosed that the child had intestinal obstruction and indicated emergency surgery.
When opening the abdomen, doctors discovered a segment of the patient's small intestine herniated through a natural defect in the small intestine mesentery, leading to intestinal torsion and strangulation.
After surgery, the child was transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and received intravenous nutrition to ensure energy recovery after major surgery, active antibiotic treatment, and vitamin supplementation.
During the second surgery, the doctors repaired the narrowed anastomosis for the child. After that, the child was fed orally, gradually increasing the amount according to demand.
Baby breastfeeds well, gains weight, urinates normally, soft belly, good scar healing.
Intestinal volvulus is a disease that causes intestinal obstruction and food stagnation, reducing blood flow to the intestine, causing inflammation, intestinal necrosis, peritonitis, and is life-threatening.
Dr. Nguyen Thanh Xuan, Deputy Director of Hue Central Hospital, said that there are many causes of intestinal volvulus, of which internal hernia through a natural defect in the small intestine mesentery is a rare cause in newborns but is common in children with meconium ileus.
When suffering from this disease, children need to be diagnosed and treated with surgery early to preserve the intestine as much as possible. If not treated promptly, the damaged intestine can become necrotic and cannot be restored; thereby, causing infection, abdominal poisoning leading to death.
