On the morning of October 25, the People's Committee of Da Nang City organized a workshop on "Building the urban railway system in Da Nang - Vision, challenges and sustainable solutions".
International railway expert Mario Valerio Dattola said that each city has its own characteristics, so it is impossible to apply a single transport model. To develop an effective public system, a comprehensive approach is needed, combining metro, monorail, tramway and automated transport systems, forming a flexible and sustainable network.
He believes that Vietnam’s biggest challenge is the habit of using motorbikes, but positive signals from the metro and BRT in Hanoi show that people are gradually trusting public transport more. For Da Nang – a city with an airport in the center and the Han River dividing the city – he suggests prioritizing light transport systems such as trams, monorails or self-propelled trains to save costs, limit landscape impact and fit with existing infrastructure.

According to Mr. Ly Van Thang, Deputy General Engineer of China Railway No. 4 Design and Survey Institute Group, Da Nang can develop urban railway in three phases: by 2030, forming a route connecting the center, airport, Tien Sa port and coastal tourist area; in the 2030-2035 period, expanding to industrial zones in the Southwest; after 2035, developing a suburban route connecting Hoi An and Hue.

Prof. Dr. Pham Hong Quang, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, proposed that Da Nang develop a tramway running on batteries or renewable energy along the coast, Hoa Vang and Son Tra to reduce dependence on motorbikes and make it more convenient for tourists. Metro is a long-term vision, while tramway and autonomous transport are feasible solutions in the short term.

Vice Chairman of the Da Nang People's Committee Le Quang Nam affirmed that the city is determined to develop a modern transport system, in which urban railways are the backbone. This network will connect airports, seaports, industrial parks, tourist areas and urban centers, contributing to reducing congestion, reducing emissions and improving the quality of life for people.
