On November 4, the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) officially opened to the public, affirming its position as one of the world's largest antiquities exhibition places and a high-tech symbol dedicated to heritage conservation.
According to a VNA reporter in Cairo, after two decades of construction, the project with a total area of nearly 500,000 square meters was inaugurated on the Giza Plateau, 2 kilometers from the Pyramids and the Sphinx.
GEM is seen as a milestone in Egypt's long-standing efforts to preserve and promote its archaeological treasures.
The main galleries showcase thousands of never-before-seen artifacts for the first time, most notably the complete collection of some 6,000 artifacts from the tomb of the young Pharaoh Tutankhamun.
GEM CEO Ahmed Ghoneim said the museum applies the latest scientific innovations, using advanced technology to restore and preserve artifacts, and serves as a center for heritage education and research.
He expects the museum to receive 15,000-20,000 visitors a day, equivalent to about 7 million visitors a year. On the first day of opening, GEM had about 18,000 visitors.
The launch of GEM is key to Egypt's national plan to attract 30 million tourists a year by 2030.

In addition to being a major catalyst for Egypt's tourism industry, GEM is also a center for scientific research and restoration, housing one of the largest and most advanced conservation and restoration centers in the Middle East.
In addition, it is also a scientific and cultural institution, providing knowledge through training courses for interested individuals from other countries, including restoration, packaging, storage and exhibition techniques.
International visitors expressed strong impressions with the scale and value of the exhibition, while local people considered GEM a new symbol of the country's spirit of innovation and modernization.
The GEM construction project began in 2005, but was delayed many times due to political instability and financial difficulties before being completed and opened this year./.
