Each episode of the program takes viewers to the place, “hearing and seeing” to have a real feeling about the journey of people living in Can Tho to preserve local cultural values. Therefore, “Can Tho Identity” not only explores the land and craft villages but also touches the hearts of the audience through the story of people who work day and night over the years to preserve traditional and cultural values, enriching their homeland.
Following the host, viewers met people who are passionate about the old profession and local cultural values. That was the meeting with Mr. Nguyen Van Hai (Trung Hung commune, Can Tho city) with his passion for making and performing lion and dragon dances of the Hoa Anh Dao lion and dragon dance troupe. The profession of making lion and dragon dances is elaborate, requiring high knowledge and technique so that the finished product has soul and can coordinate smoothly with the dancers. Originally a lion and dragon dance performer, Mr. Nguyen Van Hai has a foundation in knowledge and technique. To save costs for the troupe, Mr. Nguyen Van Hai researched and made lion and dragon dance products himself. This profession is also picky because each step must be done manually. However, with his passion, Mr. Nguyen Van Hai not only keeps the profession but also inspires his brothers in the troupe.
In “Can Tho Identity”, the stories are vividly portrayed through each slice of the local people’s lives. Like the story of Mr. Vo Van Luc, known to the locals as Mr. Tam He, who has been involved in growing chives for nearly 40 years in Trung Nhat ward. Since the 1990s, Mr. Tam He has experimented with growing chives when his corn and sugarcane gardens were not very productive. Chives are easy to grow, harvested year-round and provide a livelihood for the people of Rach Muong Ranh hamlet. Today, Rach Muong Ranh hamlet is also known as Rach He because chives are grown everywhere, creating a unique image of labor production here.
“Can Tho Identity” also depicts portraits of people who are deeply attached to the land where they live, such as the journey to preserve fisheries and rare species in the Hau River and Mekong River of old farmer Ly Van Bon (Binh Thuy Ward), or the journey to preserve the mat weaving profession of Mr. Ha Van Nghiep (Tan Loc Ward)... Each journey shows viewers the passionate love for the profession and the determination to preserve traditional values for future generations. They are diligent in their work but also constantly innovate and adapt to new ways and methods so that the old profession can reach today's young people in the easiest way.
"Can Tho Identity" not only brings to the audience knowledge about each land and people of Can Tho but also a journey to preserve indigenous cultural identities.
