White Stone Pass is another name for Thung Khe Pass, connecting Mai Chau and Tan Lac in Hoa Binh province. With its landscape resembling snow and mist year-round and its winding, curving road, Thung Khe Pass attracts many travelers. Traveling through this pass, you will be able to admire the peaceful and serene panoramic view of Mai Chau, like a traditional ink painting.
Thung Khe Pass is originally a limestone mountain area, formed by the excavation of mountains for the construction of National Highway 6. During the process of breaking up the mountains to build the road, chunks of rock slid down from above, creating a white landscape across the hills. This is how the name White Stone Pass came about.
The weather here is quite interesting, with almost all four seasons in a single day. Early mornings are cool with clear blue skies. By midday, the sun shines brightly, and the mist and clouds gradually dissipate – this is the ideal time for travelers to conquer the pass and admire the panoramic views. Towards evening, the temperature drops and fog begins to envelop the area. This time of year is quite limiting for traveling across the pass.
At the top of the pass lies Thung Khe Market, also known by travelers as the "market in the clouds." This small market is situated on a large piece of land, slightly extending towards the ravine, with small thatched-roof stalls run by locals, featuring a few rickety tables and chairs. It's a popular stop for people to rest, warm themselves up with hot tea, sticky rice cooked in bamboo tubes, boiled corn, and wild game meat.
With its majestic scenery and snow-white colors, Da Trang Pass has long been a popular check-in spot for young people traveling along the roads in Mai Chau district, Hoa Binh province.
