The 'miracle team' successfully lifted the 9,000-ton Binh Phuoc 1 bridge by an additional 1.25 meters.

To date, the raising of the clearance of Binh Phuoc 1 Bridge (Ho Chi Minh City) has been completed. Currently, the construction unit is lowering the height to a fixed level, preparing for load testing and reinforcement to put the bridge into official operation after raising it by an additional 1.25m.

On the afternoon of December 14th, speaking with Tuoi Tre Online , Mr. Nguyen Viet Quang, Head of Infrastructure Management Department No. 2 (Road Infrastructure Management Center - Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction), stated that the raising of the clearance height of Binh Phuoc 1 Bridge has been completed by the construction unit.

According to Mr. Quang, engineers and workers began lowering the jacks on December 14th. It is expected that this stage will be completed by December 16th, after which they will gradually move on to paving the approach roads, conducting load tests, and reinforcing the bridge in preparation for official operation.

The Binh Phuoc 1 bridge has been raised by 1.25m compared to its previous elevation. The raising process began in late October. During the construction, the contractor erected two temporary steel bridges at the beginning and end of the bridge spans to ensure uninterrupted traffic flow for motorcycles.

Previously, the "miracle team" also completed raising the clearance of the Binh Trieu 1 bridge by an additional 1.08m. Both projects applied the bridge jacking technology developed by the "miracle team." In this process, engineers installed a synchronized hydraulic jacking system under the bridge piers and girders, allowing the entire bridge, weighing thousands of tons, to be lifted to the correct design height without dismantling or rebuilding.

Regarding the complexity of the construction, a representative from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction stated that all stages are strictly controlled. However, the jacking operation phase is the stage where the contractor must focus the most, mobilizing many people to ensure the safety of the project according to schedule.

The hydraulic jacking system used for the Binh Phuoc 1 bridge comprises 90 jacks, including 60 jacks with a lifting capacity of 400 tons and 30 jacks with a lifting capacity of 500 tons. Each jack is equipped with a travel sensor, and the entire system is controlled by two hydraulic controllers and a central computer system.

The Binh Phuoc 1 Bridge has a total of 13 concrete spans and 3 main steel spans (navigable spans). These spans were continuously connected into three consecutive spans in 2012.

The total structural load of the bridge is estimated at approximately 9,000 tons. The lifting is being done sequentially, section by section, each section averaging over 140m in length. The contractor is lifting the bridge by 4-8cm each day.

The synchronized jacking technology applied to the Binh Phuoc 1 bridge is the second project of its kind to be implemented in Vietnam, following the Binh Trieu 1 bridge lifting project.

How is raising the Binh Phuoc 1 bridge different from a "miracle worker" lifting a house?

Compared to the "miracle worker" method of lifting houses, the lifting of bridges shares similarities in the principle of moving the structure to the design elevation, but differs fundamentally in the method.

The use of a synchronized jacking system for lifting the bridge allows the entire structure to be raised simultaneously, with jacking points controlled with an accuracy of less than 1mm, minimizing the generation of external forces that could affect the safety and lifespan of the structure.
