Livelihood transformation and sustainable economic development

In recent years, Thai Nguyen province has made efforts to implement many policies to support livelihoods, develop production and stabilize the population, creating clear changes in people's lives.

In Nghia Ta, where ethnic minorities account for 98% of the population, people are guided to develop the forest economy. Thanks to programs to support production land and job conversion, many households have formed a chain of links from planting, caring, exploiting to processing wood. As a result, many families have achieved an income of billions of dong each year, vivid proof of the effectiveness of the province's livelihood policy.

Along with that, Thuong Minh is oriented to develop specialty crops such as fragrant green squash, Tai sticky rice, arrowroot, tea, star anise... Yen Duong Cooperative has linked production with hundreds of households, building OCOP brands that meet 3 to 4 star standards, including Yen Duong arrowroot vermicelli, Le Ha tea, fragrant squash, Tai sticky rice. These products not only help people increase their income but also affirm the position of Thai Nguyen highland agricultural products in the market.

Thai Nguyen also focuses on forest protection associated with livelihood development. From 2022 to 2025, more than 2,276 hectares of forest will be contracted for protection to the community, along with more than 61,304 hectares of natural forest allocated to households, with a support level of 500,000 VND/ha/year. These models both protect the forest and create sustainable income, contributing to improving the lives of mountainous people in a stable and long-term manner.

Mr. Hoang Thanh Oai, Director of the Department of Ethnic Minorities and Religions of Thai Nguyen, emphasized: “We aim to ensure that people are not only supported in their livelihoods but also have the knowledge and skills to master their lives. When people know how to apply available resources and organize production effectively, they will proactively build economic models suitable to their conditions.”

Knowledge and technology – tools to transform communities

In addition to livelihood, Thai Nguyen identified knowledge and technology as key factors for mountainous people to access opportunities and shorten the development gap with urban areas. The Department of Ethnic Minorities and Religions coordinated to organize digital skills training classes, instructions on using smart devices, accessing the Internet, looking up documents and learning online.

Mr. Luong Van Quyen, Deputy Head of the Ethnic Policy Department, Department of Ethnic Minorities and Religions of Thai Nguyen province, propagates ethnic policies and related documents in ethnic minority and mountainous areas in 2025.

Thanks to that, people not only access information faster but also know how to exploit technology to serve production, develop household economy and community tourism. Models such as "Highland Information Fair" or "Ethnic Minority Culture and Tourism Festival" have become environments for practicing communication skills, promoting agricultural products, cuisine and traditional crafts. These activities help people learn, exchange experiences and expand product consumption markets, thereby improving household economic efficiency.

Communication projects, such as Project 6 (preservation and promotion of cultural values associated with tourism) and Project 10 (communication, inspection and supervision of the National Target Program), have been widely implemented. Conferences providing information to prestigious people, mobile propaganda sessions, film screenings, folk art performances, photo exhibitions and grassroots cultural and information clubs have become "bright spots" in communication work in the highlands, especially in localities such as Dinh Hoa, Vo Nhai, Dai Tu and Dong Hy.

Mr. Oai commented: “Knowledge and technology open up opportunities for integration, improve production capacity and promote products. When people know how to use digital technology and information, they will become proactive in economic development, no longer completely dependent on external support.”

Traditional culture – sustainable foundation

Thai Nguyen pays special attention to preserving and promoting traditional culture. The Thai Hai Ethnic Ecological Stilt House Village Conservation Area, with 25 hectares and dozens of ancient stilt houses, both preserves customs and practices and becomes a community tourism destination recognized by the United Nations Tourism Organization.

Cultural and tourism activities not only preserve traditional values but also help people learn business skills, promote products and raise awareness of national identity values. Livelihoods linked to culture and tourism open up a sustainable development direction where people preserve the environment, improve their lives and enhance their ability to integrate into the market.

Practices in Thai Nguyen show that comprehensive poverty reduction is not only about providing livelihoods but also about enhancing human capacity – from knowledge, digital skills, production management to cultural preservation. People from receiving support become community builders, proactive in economic development and protecting national identity.

Director of the Department of Ethnic Minorities and Religions Hoang Thanh Oai emphasized: “We aim for ethnic minority communities that are rich in identity, knowledgeable and confident in integration. When people are equipped with the right knowledge, skills and tools, they can develop a stable economy, protect the environment and preserve traditional culture. This is the foundation for long-term sustainable development.”

With a creative, synchronous and people-centered approach, Thai Nguyen has turned the policy of developing ethnic minority areas into a vivid reality. The ethnic minorities in the mountainous areas have not only escaped poverty but also confidently risen up, taken control of their lives, while preserving their cultural identity, developing knowledge and applying technology. This is a clear demonstration of a sustainable poverty reduction model, where knowledge, technology and culture converge, opening up a future of comprehensive development for ethnic minority communities.
