Doctors in South Africa have achieved a breakthrough: the first successful robotic kidney removal from a living donor. The operation, performed at Tygerberg Hospital, ushers in a new era of organ transplant surgery.
The crucial surgery was performed when a 45-year-old mother donated a kidney to her 24-year-old daughter. Urologist Danelo Du Plessis used the Da Vinci Xi robotic system, a state-of-the-art surgical platform that allows surgeons to operate with unprecedented precision.
With four flexible robotic arms, controlled from a 3D control panel, Da Vinci Xi helped Dr. Du Plessis perform the surgery in just 90 minutes, far exceeding all expectations. This not only shows outstanding efficiency but also confirms the safety of the method.
One of the most notable advantages of robotic surgery is that it is less invasive, which helps the donor to have significantly less pain and recover faster. As evidenced by the fact that the mother was able to leave the hospital the next day, while the new kidney began to function effectively in her daughter's body.
This success is not only a source of pride for Tygerberg Hospital and Stellenbosch University, but also an important step forward, promising to make robot-assisted surgery the gold standard in kidney transplants worldwide .
