Responding to Mario Nawfal, founder of the consulting firm International Blockchain Consulting Group, tech billionaire Elon Musk expressed his agreement and affirmed that AI will soon replace Google.Search.

“AI will kill search,” the owner of X wrote, labeling the chatbot Grok.

The billionaire's comments are not unreasonable. According to StatCounter, Google Search's market share fell below 90% for the first time in a decade by the end of 2024.

Previously, the search engine's market share fell to 89.34% at the end of 2024, then increased to 90.15% in February but continued to fall to 89.71% the following month and has not yet recovered.

Apple's senior vice president of services, Eddy Cue, said on May 7 that Google searches through the Safari browser fell for the first time in history in April.

Commenting on this, veteran Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that it is a mistake to think that generative AI will not affect Google's advertising business. "Generative AI service providers have not yet deployed advertising, so Google Ads is still the best choice," Kuo wrote.

As first reported by CNBC , Google has been testing internal homepage designs since 2023. One potential design at that time included displaying five question suggestions below the main search bar, replacing the current “I’m Feeling Lucky” button. Google is also testing a small chat icon located on the right side of the search bar.
