Elon Musk names new Twitter CEO

Linda Yaccarino has resigned as NBCUniversal's chief advertising officer to join Twitter, CEO Elon Musk confirmed in a tweet on May 12. Musk said Yaccarino will focus primarily on business operations while he focuses on product design and new technology.

“Looking forward to working with Linda to transform this platform into X, the app for everything,” he added.

Musk's announcement comes just a day after he said he was stepping down as CEO and Twitter would have a new CEO, though he did not name anyone. His successor will start work within six weeks.

Yaccarino has worked at NBCUniversal since 2011. With deep relationships in the advertising industry, she could bring strength to Twitter at a time when advertisers have withdrawn en masse, causing billions of dollars in losses since Musk bought it.

Musk completed his acquisition of Twitter in October 2022. Shortly afterward, he fired many senior executives and thousands of employees. Many companies paused advertising on Twitter. To make up for lost revenue, Musk launched a new subscription service, Twitter Blue, for $8 a month.

Yaccarino interviewed Musk at a marketing event in mid-April, where the two discussed the role of marketers in the future of Twitter. During the conference, Musk tried to reassure advertisers that Twitter was a platform to be respected.
