Hung Nguyen finished first with a time of 2 minutes 02 seconds 11, beating his Filipino opponent, Gian Christopher San (2 minutes 03 seconds 88). Nguyen Quang Thuan, Anh Vien's younger brother, finished third with a time of 2 minutes 04 seconds 19, further solidifying Vietnam's swimming performance in the opening leg.
Notably, Anh Vien's younger brother failed to break the jinx of winning gold in his third SEA Games appearance. He continued his defeat against his senior, Hung Nguyen – who has dominated this swimming event for the past three SEA Games.
However, Quang Thuấn still has a chance to compete in the men's 400m individual medley. In the two previous SEA Games, Ánh Viên's younger brother won silver medals in this event.

Meanwhile, Hung Nguyen, along with Huy Hoang and Thanh Bao, continue to be the three leading pillars of the Vietnamese swimming team at this year's SEA Games. Huy Hoang specializes in long-distance events, while Thanh Bao is also in top form in the 100m and 200m breaststroke.
It is they who have kept Vietnam's swimming prowess in the region, especially in the post-Anh Vien era – a period when the gap with Singapore's swimming threatened to widen.
Hung Nguyen's victory affirms the class of a SEA Games champion, opening up hopes for a breakthrough for the Vietnamese swimming team in the following events. With consistent performance and strengthened confidence, swimming continues to be one of the "spearheads" of the Vietnamese sports delegation at this year's Games.
