Coffee harvesting has resumed in Vietnam’s key coffee-growing region, the Central Highlands. The region has just experienced one or two days of dry weather, according to a trader. While harvesting is still interrupted in some areas, the improvement in weather bodes well for the crop.
Global coffee prices are closely monitoring the weather in Vietnam. Tropical Storm Koto, the 15th storm to enter the East Sea in 2025, unexpectedly weakened and was downgraded to a tropical depression earlier than forecast. According to LSEG Weather Research, the storm's impact on coffee growing areas in the Central Highlands is assessed as modest.
According to local media, the tropical depression is expected to move southwest at a speed of about 5 km/h. By 1am this morning, December 2, the center of the depression will be about 200 km east of the coast of Gia Lai and Dak Lak provinces. The depression is forecast to decrease to level 6 with gusts of level 8.
The Vietnam Natural Disaster Monitoring System (VNDMS) said that in the next 12 hours, the tropical depression will continue to move southwest at a speed of about 10 km/h. After that, the tropical depression is forecast to weaken into a low pressure area off the coast of Gia Lai - Dak Lak. The less severe weather than expected could help stabilize domestic coffee supply and prices.
World coffee prices today
Coffee prices on the world market increased sharply on two floors:
Robusta Coffee (London):
Delivery January 2026: Down 92 USD/ton, to 4,380 USD/ton.
Delivery in March 2026: Down 78 USD/ton, to 4,260 USD/ton.
Arabica Coffee (New York):
Delivery December 2025: Down 2.7 cents/lb, to 408.8 cents/lb.
March 2026 delivery: Down 2.65 cents/lb, to 377.05 cents/lb.
Climate change is making it harder to grow Arabica in Brazil. So Brazilian farmers are switching to Robusta, a more heat-tolerant and disease-resistant variety. The shift is reshaping the South American country’s coffee production.
Brazil’s Robusta production has been growing rapidly. Over the past three years, Robusta has grown at an annual rate of nearly 4.8%, far exceeding Arabica. This crop year in particular, Robusta production has increased by nearly 22%, reaching a record high. This growth is the main driver of global Robusta coffee prices.
Brazilian farmers are expanding Robusta acreage, even adopting advanced techniques such as planting under native trees. Vietnam is currently the largest Robusta producer, but Rabobank experts warn that Brazil could soon overtake it thanks to its well-organized supply chain, putting intense pressure on coffee prices.
With the increased supply of Robusta from Brazil, the world coffee market will change. If the general coffee price continues to increase, consumers will tend to switch to Robusta because of its more affordable price. This shift in consumption will directly affect the demand and price of Robusta coffee in the long term.
