Vietnamese coffee prices hit high in Japanese market

According to statistics from the Japan Customs Agency, in the first 6 months of 2025, the average import price of coffee to Japan from major markets all increased, of which the import price from Vietnam increased sharply by 67.5% over the same period in 2024, to 5,772 USD/ton.

Vietnam is the second largest coffee supplier to the Japanese market.

In the first 6 months of 2025, Japan imported coffee reaching 190.7 thousand tons, worth nearly 1.26 billion USD. Vietnam is the second largest coffee supplier to the Japanese market, reaching 52.9 thousand tons, worth 305.3 million USD, down 19.0% in volume but up 35.6% in value over the same period in 2024.

In the context of the fluctuating global coffee market, Japan remains one of the largest and most stable coffee consuming countries in Asia. Although consumption has not made a breakthrough, market There is a shift in consumer behavior and product strategy of major brands.

Information from the Import-Export Department ( Ministry of Industry and Trade ) shows that the total revenue of the Japanese coffee industry in 2024 will reach about 5.43 billion USD and is expected to reach 5.66 billion USD in 2033, with a growth rate of 0.47% per year in the period 2025-2033. In particular, the instant coffee segment plays an important role in revenue, estimated at 3.87 billion USD in 2025, forecast to increase to 4.56 billion USD in 2030 with an annual growth rate of 3.32%.

To increase coffee exports to Japan, Vietnamese enterprises need to focus on improving quality, especially controlling pesticide residues according to Japanese standards. Products need to have clear traceability, prioritize specialty and organic coffee and achieve prestigious certifications such as JAS, HACCP. Enterprises should proactively connect with import partners, participate in fairs and take advantage of tariff incentives from free trade agreements such as the Vietnam-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (VJEPA) and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans- Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).
