In the world market, the price of this commodity is maintaining an upward trend.

World rubber prices edged up slightly today as Mexico imposed permanent tariffs on Chinese synthetic rubber amid escalating trade tensions.

Specifically, Mexico has just imposed a permanent tax on specialized synthetic rubber imported from China, after concluding that the surge in cheap goods has caused damage to the only domestic producer. The decision shows that Mexico is tightening trade defense in the context of escalating economic tensions with Beijing. The taxed item is styrene butadiene styrene (SBS) rubber, with a fee of 0.8324 USD/kg. This is a type of thermoplastic rubber with high elasticity and is widely used in footwear, adhesives and construction materials.

The move comes after Mexico and China have been embroiled in a trade dispute, especially since Mexico proposed to impose import tariffs on cars and other products not covered by trade agreements. Beijing warned it would defend its interests against “coercive” measures.

The SBS case arose when Dynasol Elastómeros accused Chinese goods of dumping, forcing companies to lower prices to compete. An investigation by the Ministry of Economy found that Chinese products were up to 45.1% cheaper than Mexican products. With China holding more than half of global SBS capacity and exports diverted by US tariffs, Mexico fears a continued flood of cheap goods unless strong barriers are put in place.
