India expects to increase rice exports sharply, aiming to expand to new markets

The Indian Rice Exporters Federation (IREF) forecasts that India’s rice exports in 2025–2026 could reach 22–23 million tonnes, up 10–15% from last year; and could even reach 30 million tonnes if output reaches 145 million tonnes as expected. According to Commodity Insights, India’s rice output this year is expected to reach 151.8 million tonnes, up 2.8 million tonnes. Currently, the IR 64 variety still dominates the African market, while basmati varieties are popular in the Middle East.

Despite the large export volume, many experts believe that India has not focused on developing brand value. Mr. Nitin Gupta, Vice President of Olam Agri India, commented: "We are still considered the cheapest rice supplier in the world , while Thailand and Vietnam have built strong brands such as Hom Mali or DT8 5%." He believes that reducing logistics costs and expanding to new markets such as the Philippines, South Korea and Japan will help increase competitiveness.

India currently exports about 12 million tonnes of rice to Africa, 5–6 million tonnes to the Middle East and 2–3 million tonnes to Europe, the US and Oceania. However, its presence in the Far East market remains limited. Some experts warn that oversupply and slowing global demand could be major hurdles, but India’s hosting of the BIRC is expected to help restore credibility and reconnect with international buyers.
