Support farmers to increase the value of coconut trees

From the initial success of the credit program for the coconut industry, coconut farmers are looking forward to receiving more support to increase the value of coconut trees.

After a period of pilot implementation, up to now, the credit program for the coconut industry, piloted by the Vietnam Coconut Association in coordination with the agricultural sector and Agribank in Dong Thap, Vinh Long and Can Tho, has brought positive results.

Mr. Pham Van Tanh, Director of An Thoi Coconut Cooperative ( Vinh Long ), acknowledged that Agribank's support of capital for coconut growers with preferential interest rates has created favorable conditions for farmers to invest in coconut cultivation.

However, coconut farmers are looking forward to more support from associations, banks, the agricultural sector... to further increase the value of coconut trees.

Mr. Tanh said that currently, An Thoi Coconut Cooperative is regularly working closely with coconut companies in the area, especially Beinco, to build an organic coconut area. In 2024, the cooperative has cooperated with the locality and Beinco to build and develop a medium organic area in the area with an area of ​​210 hectares of 316 households. This organic coconut area was certified organic in February 2025.

In addition, An Thoi Coconut Cooperative also wishes to support access to techniques for processing coconut products, such as producing coconut caramel, foods using coconut ingredients such as confectionery, or handicraft products, in order to fully exploit the values ​​of coconut trees, thereby helping coconut farmers have stable jobs, contributing to solving local labor problems, and keeping young people in their hometowns to build their homeland.

An Thoi Coconut Cooperative also wishes to continue to accompany Aribank and businesses in building the local coconut value chain to create the highest value for coconut trees, helping coconut growers to live off coconut trees and get rich from their hometown products.

Evaluating the credit program for the coconut industry, Mr. Cao Ba Dang Khoa, General Secretary of the Vietnam Coconut Association, shared that when coconut farmers no longer have to wait for the season to sell coconuts to have money to cover their living expenses, and no longer have to depend on money borrowed from traders, farmers are more confident in the process of caring for and improving the quality of coconut trees.

Cooperatives are no longer short of resources in purchasing and supplying raw coconuts to factories. Factories are more confident in investing in machinery, technology for production, processing and exporting coconut products.

With financial security and assurance about progress in meeting production contracts, farmers and businesses boldly invest in expanding production areas, changing coconut varieties, monitoring the health of coconut trees and preventing pests and diseases in coconut gardens.

These efforts not only help retain investors in the coconut industry but also help the Vietnam Coconut Association confidently invite other investors to participate in the coconut industry in the coming time, through specific plans such as standardizing coconut varieties, handling dangerous pests and diseases on coconut trees such as black-headed caterpillars, and promoting training for farmers in each region to apply standard farming processes with coconut trees.

At the same time, the Association also takes advantage of national trade promotion capital to be present more frequently on trade promotion forums and supporting sectors at home and abroad, in order to build and enhance the image and brand of the Vietnamese coconut industry and Vietnamese coconut products, supporting businesses to improve their competitiveness in the international market in the coming time.
