A 25-year-old patient befriended a girl who was studying beauty at a local spa. Wanting to beautify her boyfriend herself, the girl injected him with filler, resulting in permanent blindness in one eye because the filler blocked the capillaries in his eye. Another case involves Ms. NT (20 years old, Go Vap District, Ho Chi Minh City) who had filler injected into her nasolabial folds and cheeks at a beauty salon in Ho Chi Minh City. Upon examination, the patient did not know what type of filler had been injected or its origin, making treatment difficult.
According to Dr. Tran Nguyen Anh Tu, Head of the Dermatology and Cosmetic Department at the Ho Chi Minh City Dermatology Hospital, even after successful treatment, these patients still suffer from many aesthetic consequences. This is because the underlying fibrous tissue has hardened, and the blood vessels are deformed and no longer normal, making it very difficult for these patients to recover to their original state. The technique of injecting fillers requires a thorough understanding of the product's properties and the injection area, as fillers have many different characteristics to suit the needs of different skin areas. For example, the eye area requires a softer filler, while the mouth area needs a more moderate one.
Associate Professor Pham Hieu Liem, Head of the Department of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery at Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine and Pharmacy and Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy, stated that fillers are a worthwhile scientific invention, containing various substances, the most common being hyaluronic acid. However, it can also cause significant harm, as many people misuse fillers of unknown origin and containing unsafe substances for injection. In Vietnam today, the issue of filler injections by untrained and unqualified individuals is a major concern, leading to numerous complications when fillers are injected directly into arteries, causing retinal embolism and blindness.
"This is a downside; fillers are inherently good substances, but in the hands of people who don't know how to use them, they become dangerous," Dr. Hieu Liem expressed his opinion.
At tertiary hospitals, complications from filler injections are not uncommon. Most patients suffer from abscesses and necrosis at the injection site due to unqualified beauty spas and practitioners. As a result, many cases lead to permanent blindness.
“Another common problem in Vietnam is that these fillers are easily purchased on e-commerce platforms and social media groups. Because they are so readily available, injections are also easily administered due to their low cost, averaging from a few hundred thousand to over a million dong per injection. When complications arise, patients often don't share any information about the clinic or the name of the filler product when they go to the hospital. From our perspective, we still have to try to treat patients according to the filler treatment protocol,” added Dr. Hieu Liem.
