Kaspersky has just released its Q2 2024 report, providing a comprehensive analysis of the cybersecurity landscape for industrial control systems (ICS). According to the report, the number of ransomware attacks increased by 20% compared to the previous quarter.
The report indicates that critical infrastructure sectors worldwide are facing increasing risks from cyberattacks, with ransomware and spyware being the most serious threats.
According to Kaspersky research, the percentage of industrial control computers (ICS computers) globally at risk of cyberattacks decreased slightly from 24.4% in Q1 2024 to 23.5% in Q2 2024. However, the number of ransomware attacks increased sharply, with the percentage of ICS computers affected by ransomware rising 1.2 times compared to the previous quarter. The report also noted that spyware remains a persistent threat. Attackers can use spyware to conduct espionage, paving the way for ransomware and other targeted attacks.
Evgeny Goncharov, head of Kaspersky's Industrial Control Systems Emergency Response Unit (ICS CERT), stated: “These types of malware are just as dangerous as ransomware and can disrupt critical operations in any industry, from manufacturing, energy, and transportation to others. Meanwhile, spyware is often used to steal private business information and resell it on the dark web to criminal gangs that use ransomware for extortion, hacker groups that carry out cyberattacks for political or social purposes (hacktivists), or organized criminal groups with specific attack targets (APTs) to use in subsequent attacks.”
