Millions of accounts stolen, experts warn of AI fraud

(Dan Tri) - Many new forms of AI-based attacks have emerged, from personalized phishing emails, fake deepfakes to self-mutating malware.

In recent years, AI has become one of the most influential technological drivers. AI not only opens up the possibility of predicting, detecting and responding to incidents faster and more accurately, but is also being used by cybercriminals as a “new weapon”.

According to data from Viettel Threat Intelligence, in the first 6 months of 2025, this unit recorded more than 8.5 million stolen accounts in Vietnam, nearly 530,000 distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, 191 data leaks with more than 3 billion records, three times more than the same period in 2024.

In particular, many new forms of AI-based attacks have emerged, from personalized phishing emails, fake deepfakes to self-mutating malware, causing traditional defense systems to face many challenges and pressures.

Speaking at the CIO CSO Summit 2025, Mr. Nguyen Son Hai, Director of Viettel Cyber ​​Security, said that artificial intelligence (AI) has opened up many opportunities but also raised new issues regarding information security. This needs to be thoroughly considered and discussed.

According to experts, in the context of the "dual revolution" from AI, Vietnamese businesses and information security markets must not only respond, but also build long-term strategies.

This move aims to master the technology and shape the way it operates, so that AI can truly demonstrate its value and become an important element to ensure sustainable digital development.
