Solution to find output for hawthorn fruit

With a total area of 12,840 hectares, Son La is currently the province with the largest hawthorn area and output in the country. Localities are actively attracting investment, linking production, and consuming products, helping people grow hawthorn trees, increase income, and stabilize their lives.

Thuan Chau district has over 5,167 hectares of hawthorn trees, concentrated in the communes of Long He, Nam Lau, Ban Lam, Muoi Noi, Muong E, Phong Lai, Chieng Bom, Co Ma, Pa Long, Co Tong, and Pung Tra. The harvested area is about 2,500 hectares, with an estimated fruit output of 6,250 tons. The district has promoted trade promotion activities, coordinated with media agencies, supported the promotion, introduction, and consumption of hawthorn products in and outside the province; invited and created conditions for businesses to invest in processing facilities, ensuring product output.

At the recent Co Ma highland market, the People's Committee of Thuan Chau district coordinated with individuals and organizations to livestream the program "Promoting hawthorn apples, OCOP products and agricultural products of Thuan Chau district". During the 2 days of livestream (from September 1-2) on tiktok and Facebook, it attracted over 3,762 interactions, 2,246 comments, 3,388 shares and 218,000 views. More than 100 orders were sold with hundreds of bottles of vinegar, hawthorn chili sauce, more than 300 kg of dried hawthorn apples and 3,000 kg of fresh hawthorn apples, bringing the hawthorn apple brand and hawthorn processed products to a wider range of customers in the markets.

Ms. Quang Thi Phuong, Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Thuan Chau district, informed: As of September 28, the district has connected businesses and business households to consume more than 500 tons of fresh hawthorn fruit. Currently, there are 3-5 cooperatives and business households purchasing and consuming hawthorn fruit for people.

This year's fruit crop, Thuan Chau Green Agriculture Cooperative, Nam Tien village, Bon Phang commune, has purchased over 30 tons of hawthorn fruit to produce dried hawthorn products and needs to purchase an additional 50 tons of fresh fruit, at a price of 5,000-8,000 VND/kg to produce hawthorn vinegar and hawthorn chili sauce.

Ms. Giang Thi Thu Tham, Director of the Cooperative, informed: Up to now, the Cooperative has produced over 3,000 liters of apple cider vinegar and nearly 1,000 bottles of hawthorn chili sauce. Sold at 70,000 VND/liter of apple cider vinegar and 70,000 VND/350 grams of chili sauce, it is popular with customers, and some partners have agreed to distribute in large quantities. The Cooperative is speeding up the completion of the factory, the processing area, investing in purchasing machinery to produce and research more hawthorn juice products.

In Muong La district, there are 2,500 hectares of hawthorn, concentrated in highland communes such as Ngoc Chien, Chieng Cong, Chieng An, Chieng Muon, Hua Trai, and Nam Pam. The estimated hawthorn output of the district in 2023 is over 8,000 tons. The district is promoting the people to coordinate with businesses and cooperatives inside and outside the district to create products from hawthorn fruit such as hawthorn tea, hawthorn juice, and hawthorn extract.

Since June, the Mountain Medicinal Herbs Cooperative, Sub-area 2, It Ong Town has purchased 2 tons of dried hawthorn from local people to produce hawthorn tea to sell to tea agents in provinces and cities across the country. In addition, the Cooperative is researching and processing products such as: Shampoo, facial cleanser, exfoliator, toothpaste with the main flavor of hawthorn and other medicinal herbs.

In addition, in the area, Dang Duong Company Limited, Muong Bu commune also processes hawthorn tea, Pi Tong agricultural cooperative is installing a hawthorn juice pressing line, contributing to the consumption and processing of hawthorn fruit in the area. Since the beginning of the season, the whole district has harvested about 3,000 tons of hawthorn fruit, reaching 30% of the plan.

This year, the selling price of hawthorn is a few thousand dong higher than last year, but the market for hawthorn products is not stable; products processed from hawthorn are not yet diverse, the connection between households and purchasing and processing units is not sustainable; there are no large-scale processing facilities to consume products for the people.

Discussing market solutions and promoting hawthorn consumption, Ms. Do Thi Bich Chau, Deputy Director of the Department of Industry and Trade, said: We support businesses and cooperatives to connect and bring products to e-commerce platforms; coordinate with districts to strengthen trade promotion activities, expand consumption markets, and create favorable conditions for businesses to research and build hawthorn preservation and processing chains right in the locality.
