Before the final round of the men's 400m freestyle, few people thought that Nguyen Huy Hoang would be able to bring home a bronze medal. Because this is not the Vietnamese swimmer's forte. Right from the start, Huy Hoang was always in last place and he only started to break away in the last 100m. With great efforts and determination, the swimmer from Quang Binh finished in 3rd place to the surprise of his fans.
Swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang speeds to the finish line
This unexpected bronze medal shows that swimmer Huy Hoang has relieved the pressure after winning the bronze medal at the 19th Asian Games yesterday. A few days earlier, Hoang failed in the 1,500m event - the event in which he won the silver medal at the 28th Asian Games.
Hoang said on the evening of September 29: "I had a strategy for myself at this distance when I was conserving energy in the first laps. At the end of the race, when I had the chance, I decided to speed up to finish in 3rd place."
Huy Hoang was surprised when he finished 3rd in the 400m freestyle event.
Huy Hoang admitted: "I am very happy and pleased to win a medal in this distance. I myself am surprised. I would like to thank my relatives, friends and coaches who have accompanied me during the past time. It is everyone's sharing that has helped me overcome the pressure to compete better and win another bronze medal for the Vietnamese sports delegation."
