Many traffic safety risks from school age

According to statistics from the Traffic Police Department, in 2024, there were 3,977 traffic accidents involving students nationwide, accounting for nearly 17% of the total number of accidents, an increase of 1.6% over the same period in 2023. Common violations include: driving a motor vehicle when underage, not wearing a helmet, driving side by side, running a red light... A number of students still lack knowledge and skills to respond when encountering unexpected situations, while traffic skills education in many places is still not given due importance.

Notably, in many accidents, the direct cause stems from a lack of understanding of traffic rules or subjective psychology, even imitating the violations of adults. This reality shows that propaganda, education and guidance on safe traffic skills for students in schools are of particular importance, being the "key" to reducing traffic accidents among school-age children.

92 papers contribute many scientific and practical perspectives

This workshop attracted 92 presentations from leaders of the Public Security of provinces and cities; Departments of the Ministry of Public Security ; Department of Education and Training; experts and scientists inside and outside the industry. The content is divided into 4 groups:

1. Theoretical basis for propaganda and traffic skills guidance for students.

2. Current implementation status in schools.

3. Solutions to improve the effectiveness of education and propaganda.

4. International experience in traffic skills training for school-age children.

Delegates agreed that in recent times, the work of educating traffic laws and skills in schools has had many positive changes. Students are increasingly more aware when participating in traffic; many creative models have been replicated, such as "Traffic safety school gate", "Traffic safety class time", or competitions to learn about traffic safety knowledge through dramatization, social networks, and television.

In particular, the coordination program between the Ministry of Public Security and the Ministry of Education and Training has created an important legal corridor and mechanism for synchronously implementing propaganda and legal education on traffic safety for students. Extracurricular activities and multi-platform communication have contributed to spreading the message "Traffic safety is the happiness of every family" to a large number of students and parents.

Continue to perfect the coordination model "School - Family - Police"

Despite many positive results, delegates also pointed out shortcomings that need to be overcome. In many localities, traffic violations by students are still common; infrastructure and equipment for teaching skills are lacking; teachers have not received specialized training in practical instruction skills; and coordination between schools, families and the police force is not very close.

Opinions at the Workshop agreed that in the coming time, it is necessary to build a sustainable coordination mechanism between three entities: School - Family - Police, linking traffic skills education with the main curriculum and practical experience activities. At the same time, innovate the form of propaganda in a close, vivid direction, applying digital technology to make it easier for students to access and interact.

In his concluding remarks at the workshop, Major General Chu Van Dung emphasized: “Educating students on traffic safety skills is not only the task of the police or education sector, but also the responsibility of the whole society. Equipping students with knowledge, awareness and correct behavior today is investing in a generation of civilized and safe citizens on all roads in the future.”
