Back to the roots
Dien Bien Phu Historical Victory Museum (Dien Bien Phu City, Dien Bien) was built in 2012 and inaugurated and opened to visitors on May 5, 2014 on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of Dien Bien Phu Victory.
Not only is it a key cultural institution and work, a place to preserve, display and promote the values of documents and artifacts related to the Dien Bien Phu Victory, but it is also a typical cultural work, a red address for organizing events, educational activities on historical traditions, and a tourist destination of Dien Bien province.
At the Dien Bien Phu Victory Museum, the coordination with schools to organize the experiential activity “We are Dien Bien soldiers” takes place regularly. Students are transformed into Dien Bien soldiers of the past, thereby helping them understand more deeply the heroic history of the nation, the sacrifices, hardships and great contributions of the previous generations in the cause of fighting for independence and freedom for the Vietnamese people.
Ms. Bui Thi Tiep - Dien Bien Ethnic Boarding School shared: “History is not only the past, but also contains precious values left by our ancestors, which need to be promoted and passed down through many generations. Realizing the meaning and role of history in shaping the personality, qualities and patriotism of each student, Dien Bien Ethnic Boarding School organized an experiential learning session at General Vo Nguyen Giap's Command Bunker in Muong Phang Commune, Dien Bien Phu City”.
According to Ms. Tiep, the trip not only provided useful knowledge, supporting subjects such as History and Literature in the school curriculum, but also helped students look back to their roots, be grateful for the great contributions of national heroes. From there, they accumulated many life lessons, trained independence and a sense of responsibility.
“This is the first step in the process of forming personality and future career orientation, motivating students to strive to study well to realize their dreams and ambitions,” Ms. Tiep shared.

Ms. Vu Thi Tuyet Nga - Director of Dien Bien Phu Victory Museum said that the coordination of organizing experiential activities is carried out annually over the years. In 2024, the museum will develop a plan and organize an experiential program for 3 schools in and outside the province, attracting nearly 500 students and teachers to participate.
Through the activity, students learned more about history, especially the 1954 Dien Bien Phu Campaign, thereby encouraging and motivating the younger generation to continue and promote the heroic Dien Bien Phu tradition.
In March 2025, the Dien Bien Phu Victory Museum coordinated to organize an experiential activity for 2 schools: Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted (Dien Bien Phu City), Thanh Chan High School (Dien Bien District) with the participation of nearly 200 students and teachers. With careful and scientific preparation by museum staff and the enthusiasm and interest of students, the experiential activity took place in a vibrant and attractive competitive atmosphere.
Under the guidance of the staff of the Dien Bien Phu Victory Museum, students were able to transform and experience a variety of things, from joining the army, ringing the golden bell, cooking for Hoang Cam kitchen, loading food and ammunition, etc. The activities involved the coordination and solidarity of all students in the school and each class.

Among the experiences, I like the most the activity of loading food and ammunition because it requires solidarity, coordination, and promoting collective strength."
In addition to experiential activities at the museum, patriotic education is also integrated and implemented in major festivals such as the Ban Flower Festival. Some activities: Bicycle carrying, ammunition loading, and artillery pulling at the festival are not only competitive, but also an opportunity to recreate and bring the image of Dien Bien soldiers during the resistance war to a large number of people, tourists, especially young generations in and outside the province.
Lo Van Khanh Truong - a student of Phan Dinh Giot High School (Dien Bien Phu City) participated in the competition of pushing a bicycle to carry ammunition and pulling artillery. "Through the competition, I hope the image of Dien Bien soldiers will be spread, more people will know and understand the sacrifices and overcoming all hardships to fight for national independence and freedom of Dien Bien soldiers", the male student confided.
Sung A Tuan - a student of the Dien Bien Province Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities - experienced the 69m long tunnel through the mountain from General Vo Nguyen Giap's hut to the hut of Chief of Staff Hoang Van Thai and the hut of Military Advisor Vi Quoc Thanh that our soldiers dug for 28 days and nights to serve the campaign.
Here, General Vo Nguyen Giap and the Campaign Command issued directives and attack orders that were decisive to the victory of each battle, culminating in the general attack on the entire front on May 7, 1954, creating a victory that "resounded throughout the five continents and shook the world".
