Every 2 years, 14/14 provincial and district hospitals organize nursing competitions with many names and diverse forms suitable to the characteristics of the unit. Many units have organized professional nursing competitions combined with behavioral and talent competitions. From 2024 to present, the Provincial Nursing Association has organized 6 provincial-level thematic meetings; many medical facilities organized thematic activities on May 12 with the theme "Our nurses, our future - The economic strength of nursing care".
Ms. Nguyen Thi Lieu, Head of Nursing Department of the Provincial General Hospital shared: The Provincial General Hospital currently has 450 people working in nursing, accounting for more than 50% of the total number of staff, doctors, and workers of the unit. These are the people who have the most contact with patients, from the time the patient is admitted to the hospital until he or she is discharged. Therefore, we always pay attention to encouraging, organizing training, organizing competitions and performances to create conditions for practicing professional skills, communication skills, and behavior. Thereby, each nurse has the opportunity to practice their expertise, cultivate medical ethics, and improve themselves in a high-pressure environment.
With more than 7 years of experience, nurse Hoang Quang Thuy, Department of Intensive Care - Anti-Poison, Provincial General Hospital shared: The specialty of the department is to receive and treat seriously ill patients and patients on ventilators. Therefore, we need to take care of patients comprehensively. In addition to performing specialized procedures, we also support patients with personal hygiene... During my work, I have experienced many difficulties and hardships, but seeing the patients I have cared for healthy and discharged from the hospital makes me very happy and gives me more motivation to continue doing my job well.
Along with the Provincial General Hospital, district-level medical centers are also interested in improving the quality of nursing work with many practical measures. Nurse Nguyen Thi Thuy Linh, Head of Nursing Department of Huu Lung District Medical Center said: To help patients receive the best treatment, every month and every quarter, we have organized inspection teams on nursing work, patient safety in the hospital and at commune health stations; organized competitions; encouraged nurses to participate in training classes, advanced courses. At the same time, we regularly update information, grasp the wishes and aspirations of patients to respond to doctors during the treatment process. Thanks to that, the satisfaction rate of patients at the center is always above 97.18%.
According to the Provincial Nursing Association, the province currently has more than 1,160 nurses working at 4 provincial hospitals and 10 district health centers. Mr. Hoang Xuan Truong, Deputy Director of the Department of Health, said: Nurses are the team that provides the most, most frequently and continuously medical services. This is also the force that directly cares for patients and is under a lot of pressure at work. Therefore, in recent times, the health sector has always focused on measures to improve the quality of nursing human resources, from training, professional training, to organizing competitions for excellent and elegant nurses at hospitals and health centers for nursing staff to practice communication skills and professional ethics.
Every year, the health sector organizes training courses to improve knowledge for nursing staff. Training content includes: techniques for handling anaphylaxis, communication and behavior towards patient satisfaction... From 2024 to present, the sector has provided training on regulations in infection control at medical examination and treatment facilities; instructions for resuscitation of asphyxiated newborns; and communication and behavior skills for more than 2,000 nurses.
Not only focusing on expertise, medical units also implemented many initiatives to improve the quality of patient care. In 2024, the whole province had 42 members participating in research, of which 6 topics were accepted. This is clear evidence of the change in professional thinking, from "following instructions" to proactively proposing solutions and initiatives to improve the quality of nursing.
With the efforts of the health sector, the nursing staff has increasingly improved their medical ethics and professional expertise with 94.3% having a college degree or higher (of which, 30.9% have a university or postgraduate degree), approaching the target that from January 1, 2028, all level IV nursing officers (intermediate level) must complete a college degree in nursing or higher (according to Circular 02/2025/TT-BYT of the Ministry of Health). From there, contributing to the good performance of patient care with the satisfaction rate of people with medical services reaching over 85%, exceeding the set target (80%). Ms. Hoang Thi Phuong, residing in That Khe town, Trang Dinh district, said: I am a patient being treated at the Department of Traditional Medicine, Provincial Rehabilitation Hospital. Since the day I came here for treatment, the nurses have cared for me like family, attentive, thoughtful, and affectionate. I was paralyzed and now I can walk again. I am very grateful for the enthusiastic care of the nurses.
In the journey of accompanying the sick, nurses are the ones who share the pain, listen and accompany the patient's recovery. Therefore, investing in improving the quality of this team is not only an investment in the quality of healthcare, but also an investment in people's trust in the public health system.
