Microsoft Urgently Warns 'Pirated' OneDrive Users
This policy primarily targets unlicensed OneDrive accounts, which typically belong to people who have left the organization, been removed from the SharePoint admin center, or had their licenses revoked by an administrator.
After 93 days of inactivity, the data on these accounts will be moved to the trash. After 93 days, they will be permanently deleted. However, users can still 'save' their data by reactivating the account or setting up a retention policy. However, recovering the data will come with a small fee.
Microsoft recommends that OneDrive users immediately check the status of their accounts and take timely measures to avoid losing important data.
This is considered a bold move by Microsoft to enhance security and compliance for OneDrive. However, it also sounds the alarm bell for millions of users about protecting personal data on the cloud platform.
