A journey of fighting alongside my small family.

When diagnosed with breast cancer in 2024, singer Hong Nhung faced a difficult decision: postpone surgery to perform her "Hong Nhung Sings About Hanoi" show or prioritize her health.

Speaking to VietNamNet , Hong Nhung shared that when she received the diagnosis of a terminal illness, the show at Ho Guom Theater had already sold 3/4 of its tickets, with all tickets sold out more than 3 weeks before the performance. With the support of her doctors, the singer was determined to go ahead with the show, working with director Cao Trung Hieu and music director Hoai Sa, and involving over 130 performers.

Hong Nhung sings "Hanoi is me":

For any woman facing a health crisis, the first thing that comes to mind is always her children, especially for single mothers like Hong Nhung. Fortunately, she received help from psychologists on how to talk to her 13-year-old twins in the most appropriate way.

With guidance from her psychologist, Hong Nhung found a gentle way to communicate with her children. The two children were quite mature for their age, so although they loved and worried about their mother, they didn't become overly sentimental. They chose music for Hong Nhung to listen to and drew pictures for her. The two children became a great source of motivation for the singer to get through her treatment.

Throughout her battle with illness, music became a lifeline for Hong Nhung. She believes that artists are fortunate because the art they are passionate about will always be their salvation in life. Even while in the hospital, the singer continued to compose.

Given her current health condition, she needs special ways to take care of herself with the help of doctors, but the most important thing is her mental state. Hong Nhung focuses on music, combining yoga and meditation, so she is completely confident that she will be able to perform well in her work.

A new perspective on life and art.

After a difficult journey, Hong Nhung's perspective on life changed significantly. She realized that when healthy, people think life has too many problems. But when faced with a terminal illness, they see that there is only one problem – health. Now, health is the top priority and also the message Hong Nhung wants to spread.

Speaking to VietNamNet , Hong Nhung shared that after the surgery, she received regular check-ups – initially every three months, then every six months. The doctor constantly changed her medication to maintain her health at its best. Fortunately, Hong Nhung continued to practice singing every day, as well as yoga and meditation, which helped her maintain her voice and even expand her vocal range.

Besides her music career, Hong Nhung realized she needed and wanted to fulfill an equally important mission: spreading a positive spirit to women, encouraging regular health checkups and cancer screenings. Breast and cervical cancers are very common among women, but if detected early, the cure rate is very high.

The song "The Pink Ribbon" was composed by Hong Nhung at a hospital for women in similar circumstances. The song was recorded with 11 vocalists and carries a message encouraging women to have regular health checkups and cancer screenings, while also reassuring those who are unfortunate enough to be diagnosed that they are not alone.

Hong Nhung returned in 2025 with "Tu Hoi" (I Ask) - a completely new style. The song, co-written by her with Lope Pham and Trung Tran, was filmed at the Hanoi Opera House. She said that the team may have written a small chapter in the history of music video production by combining youthful music with classical visual performance at a place that has become a heritage site.

This is the future direction for Hong Nhung - she really wants to collaborate with young artists. Right after "I Ask," she was happy to work with DTAP on the song "A Small Extraordinary Thing" with rapper Den Vau.

This Lunar New Year, Hong Nhung will release an album about Hanoi titled "Hanoi Is Me," featuring a symphony orchestra. The album will include both old and new songs about Hanoi, and will be released on CD and digital music platforms.
