Gender equality and prevention and response to gender-based violence are important topics that the United Nations (UN) Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) in Vietnam focuses on within the framework of the 2024 communication training program (from June 12-14 in Quang Ninh).

Attending the training program were experts from UN Women in Vietnam, representatives from professional agencies with the role of guiding communication skills, officers directly working in communication at central and local press agencies; at corporations, companies, political and social organizations...

The training program helped delegates understand gender and gender equality; use AI in communication on gender equality; use Social listening tools to measure the impact of media perception on gender equality.

In addition, the training participants discussed the principles of gender equality communication as well as the difficulties, challenges and opportunities for those working in gender equality communication; trends and current status of gender violence and cyber violence in the world and in Vietnam.

Through creative training methods such as games, circles of influence, group exercises, and situational simulations, UN Women in Vietnam has helped program participants gain a practical and in-depth view of current prominent issues in gender equality.

Since implementing the Sustainable Development Goals, Vietnam's world ranking on gender equality has increased from 83rd to 72nd out of 146 countries (according to the Global Gender Gap Report published by the World Economic Forum in 2023).

Over the past time, Vietnam has continued to strengthen its policy and legal framework on gender equality. For example, the Law on Support for Small and Medium Enterprises (2017); the Law on Prevention and Control of Domestic Violence (amended) 2022; the Labor Code (amended) 2019.

Vietnam has boosted women’s political participation in the 2021 election, with 30.26% of National Assembly deputies being female – the highest since 1976, above the global average of 25%. Vietnam has one of the highest rates of female labor force participation in the world, with the rate almost as high as that of men (72% for women, compared to 82% for men).

Vietnam recently adopted its first National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security in January 2024 and has exceeded its target on enhancing the role and participation of women in peacekeeping operations.

Although many remarkable achievements have been made in the effort to achieve gender equality, delegates attending the training course shared the common assessment that Vietnam still needs to make more efforts in this process, and each individual in society must first boldly say "no" to gender-based violence.

UN Women is the United Nations specialized agency for gender equality and the empowerment of women. As a global leader for women and girls, UN Women was established to accelerate progress in meeting the needs of women and girls worldwide. In Vietnam, in carrying out its mandate for gender equality and women's empowerment, UN Women has provided technical and financial support to implement many projects to promote gender equality and the advancement of women.
