Báo Công thươngBáo Công thương15/03/2025

Activities aimed at connecting and supporting Malaysian businesses in conducting surveys in Vietnam not only promote trade but also support investment cooperation between Vietnam and Malaysia.

Networking and market research activities are continuously organized.

In serious implementation of the Ministry of Industry and Trade 's directive to support and connect businesses between Vietnam and Malaysia for cooperation and investment expansion, on March 14th and 15th, the Vietnamese Trade Office in Malaysia coordinated and invited a delegation of Malaysian businesses, including Digital AI KeyAD Media Asia Sen. Bhd. and the Malaysian-Vietnamese Chamber of Commerce (MVCC), to participate in the program "Meeting 2025: Lao Cai - A Center for Economic and Trade Connections between Vietnam and ASEAN Countries with Southwest China".

The program, organized by the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) in collaboration with the Lao Cai Department of Finance, was held in Lao Cai with the aim of helping businesses and investors in the ASEAN region understand the development potential of the border economic zone in Lao Cai.

On March 15th, businesses and many investors visited and surveyed the Kim Thanh International Road Border Gate No. 2 and the Ban Vuoc border gate (Bat Xat).

Mr. Le Phu Cuong (second from the left) is participating in and supporting Malaysian businesses coming to Vietnam to explore the market and opportunities for trade cooperation.

Mr. Le Phu Cuong, Commercial Counselor of the Vietnam Trade Office in Malaysia, stated that the field survey not only provided foreign investors and businesses in general, but also helped Malaysian businesses and partners gain more information about the detailed planning and development potential of the border gate system in Lao Cai province. This will enhance opportunities for investment and business cooperation between Vietnamese and Malaysian businesses.

According to Mr. Le Phu Cuong, during this trip to Vietnam, Malaysian businesses and the Malaysian-Vietnamese Chamber of Commerce (MVCC) held a meeting with the Lao Cai Investment and Trade Promotion Center to discuss support for exporting the province's distinctive agricultural products to the Malaysian market.

During the meeting, Trade Counselor Le Phu Cuong introduced to the Malaysian partners the potential for cooperation between Vietnam in general and Lao Cai province in particular in the agricultural sector.

With a population of 100 million and a predominantly young workforce, Vietnam has successfully implemented its agricultural export plan, focusing on strategic products such as rice, coffee, and various high-quality fresh fruits. These are also key export items for Vietnam, and Malaysia has a high demand for them.

According to preliminary statistics, Lao Cai province has one of the highest numbers of OCOP (One Commune One Product) products, with approximately 205 products rated 3 stars or higher; including 10 4-star products and 195 3-star products from 100 participating businesses. In recent times, to enhance the promotion of the province's distinctive products, the Lao Cai Provincial People's Committee and relevant departments have intensified trade promotion through domestic and international trade fairs and exhibitions; they have also invited foreign business delegations to explore opportunities for cooperation and business.

"Hopefully, through this meeting, Malaysian businesses as well as the Malaysian-Vietnamese Chamber of Commerce will be able to select many potential products for cooperation, " Mr. Le Phu Cuong expressed his expectations and affirmed that the trade mission always accompanies businesses and provinces and cities in Vietnam in finding partners and connecting, helping businesses penetrate the Malaysian market and sharing the common goal of bringing Vietnamese goods to the world.

The effectiveness of trade promotion programs.

Notably, during this business trip to Vietnam, Malaysian businesses also requested the Trade Office's support in connecting visits and working sessions with businesses exporting processed food and beverages, especially Halal-certified products, in the Hanoi area from March 17th to 19th.

This deal supports a delegation of Malaysian distribution and retail businesses to conduct surveys and work in the northern provinces and cities.

Regarding cooperation in exporting Halal products, Counselor Le Phu Cuong noted that in addition to the prerequisite of the Muslim market, which is the Halal standard, Vietnamese products are increasingly achieving higher quality, with packaging and labels that are complete and eye-catching, and include QR codes for verification, meeting the requirements of trading partners. Furthermore, Vietnamese products are constantly innovating and improving their technology to create a competitive advantage.

Examples include dried pho and dried vermicelli products from Vietnam Agricultural and Food Products Import-Export Joint Stock Company under the VAFOOD brand, which use advanced Japanese freeze-drying technology to create products that retain the flavor of fresh products, or cashews with many new flavors such as honey, coffee, garlic and chili from Hot Anuts Limited Liability Company.

" To date, only about 1,000 businesses exporting to the Malaysian market have Halal certification for approximately 3,000 products . Therefore, there is still significant potential for exporting these products."

In November 2024, in Malaysia, with the approval of the Minister of Industry and Trade, Nguyen Hong Dien, the Department of Foreign Market Development (formerly the Department of Asia-Africa Markets ) and the Halal Cooperation Agency, under the Malaysian Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry, signed a Letter of Intent on Halal cooperation.

"This activity not only helps to improve businesses' understanding of Halal exports to the Malaysian market but also to the markets of Muslim countries in general, " Mr. Le Phu Cuong informed and emphasized.

On the other hand, during the same trip, the Association of Overseas Chinese Commerce and Industry in Malaysia (ACCCIM) also requested the trade mission's support and connection to work with VCCI and the Trade Promotion Agency to promote relations with trade and investment promotion organizations in ASEAN countries, explore potential cooperation opportunities with Vietnamese organizations and agencies, and introduce planned ASEAN events during Malaysia's chairmanship of ASEAN.

Mr. Le Phu Cuong stated that activities connecting and supporting Malaysian businesses in surveying the Vietnamese market not only promote trade but also greatly support investment cooperation between Vietnam and Malaysia.

Specifically, from February 9-12, the trade mission supported a delegation of Malaysian distribution and retail businesses (including AEON Co. (M) Berhad and LS Sales and Marketing Sdn. Bhd) in conducting surveys and working in northern provinces and cities.

Following the survey trip, LS Sales and Marketing Sdn. Bhd will coordinate with the trade office and businesses to organize a Vietnamese goods fair at AEON shopping malls to promote the sale of Vietnamese food and beverages into the Malaysian retail system.

This is a very positive result for the promotion, introduction, and sale of goods. In the future, the trade mission will also strengthen its survey activities and act as a bridge to support businesses in both countries in understanding the market and diversifying export products.

According to statistics, Malaysia and Vietnam are currently each other's only comprehensive strategic partners in Southeast Asia. Malaysia is Vietnam's second-largest trading partner in ASEAN and its eleventh-largest globally.

Statistics from the Customs Department also show that Vietnam's exports to Malaysia in January 2025 reached US$333.7 million, a decrease of 20.5% compared to the previous month and a decrease of 28.1% compared to the same period last year.
