Coach Carlo Ancelotti sentenced to 1 year in prison

Coach Carlo Ancelotti was sentenced to one year in prison by a Spanish court for tax fraud in 2014, when the Italian strategist led Real Madrid.

Mr. Ancelotti (66 years old) is accused of using companies outside Spain (Virgin Islands and London) to receive payments for image copyright. With this method, Coach Ancelotti evaded taxes with an amount of up to 450,000 USD in 2014.

On July 9, the court sentenced coach Carlo Ancelotti to 1 year in prison, which is the minimum sentence according to regulations. This sentence is considered quite light for the Italian strategist because Spanish prosecutors had requested a sentence of up to 4 years in prison.

However, the final penalty for coach Ancelotti may be the lightest because he paid his tax debt in 2021 and cooperated very well in working with the investigation agency.

Under Spanish law, if a person is sentenced to two years or less in prison for a non-violent act, the sentence is suspended. So, coach Ancelotti will not have to serve time in prison and continue his work with the Brazilian national team.

Coach Ancelotti left Real Madrid to lead the Brazilian national team from this summer. The Italian strategist had two periods as Real Madrid coach, from 2013-2015 and from 2021-2025, and with this team won 14 major and minor titles, including 3 Champions League.
