At the 33rd SEA Games, the Vietnamese women’s team was in a tough group with teams like the Philippines, Myanmar and Malaysia. The Philippines and Myanmar are both top teams in the region and have made an impression in Asian tournaments in recent years.

Coach Mai Duc Chung was quite cautious when assessing the opponents in Group B. He said: “I do not consider Malaysia a weak team. They are progressing quickly. Myanmar and the Philippines are both heavily invested. Therefore, the whole team needs to show greater determination. We have to focus on solving each match and the ultimate goal is still to reach the final.”
In this tournament, the Vietnamese women's team lacked many key players such as Chuong Thi Kieu, Duong Thi Van... However, coach Mai Duc Chung talked about the team's collective strength.
“Some of the older players are injured so we give a chance to many young faces. The young players are improving and we support them to grow. We do not have stars, but a united team,” he said.
Huynh Nhu is still an exemplary captain. When I returned to Chonburi Stadium, I remembered the moment she scored the goal that helped Vietnam win the AFF Cup 6 years ago. It was a beautiful memory but now we have to focus on the SEA Games.”
Meanwhile, Malaysia coach Joel Cornelli affirmed: “We have prepared well, played a friendly match with Bangladesh and showed progress. I am satisfied with the current situation.”
