Coach Mai Duc Chung gives reasons why Vietnam women's team won big against Malaysia

(Dan Tri) - The Vietnamese women's team won 7-0 against Malaysia in the opening match of the 33rd SEA Games. Coach Mai Duc Chung was satisfied with his players' performance and said that the team had fully achieved all the set goals.

“The Vietnamese women’s team beat Malaysia, a team that is improving and just had a good result against Bangladesh. I always remind the players to stay focused and we were lucky to win,” said coach Mai Duc Chung after the match.

According to the veteran coach, the team met important requirements in terms of force: “We have no injuries, no yellow cards, thereby preserving the strongest squad for the next match. This is an extremely important factor.”

Coach Mai Duc Chung said he had proactively used a team that combined young and experienced players: “I did not use one group entirely but arranged them alternately. The goal was to score many goals and the players performed very well.”

When asked if he would continue to push his team to score more goals despite the score being 7-0, he said frankly: “Every coach wants to score as many goals as possible, especially in a competitive group. If there is a chance, I always hope the team scores more.”

The coach was also emotional when mentioning the cheering in the stands: “Today there was only a small group of Vietnamese fans but they cheered very enthusiastically. I was really touched when I heard many people calling my name. Thank you to the fans who supported the team and me personally.”

On the players’ side, Thai Thi Thao, who scored her first hat-trick for the national team, shared: “I was lucky to score 3 goals. That was the result of the good playing style and position that the whole team created. This will be the motivation for us to look forward to the next matches.”

She revealed that this hat-trick was dedicated to a teammate who had just welcomed a new family member: "This is the first hat-trick in the team so I am very happy and hope the whole team will have a successful SEA Games 33."
