On the evening of December 8, a shocking result appeared in Group C of the men's football at the 33rd SEA Games. U22 Indonesia unexpectedly fell to U22 Philippines. Ironically, Indonesia lost from their signature long throw-in which they had successfully performed at the 32nd SEA Games and the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
The goal came at the end of the first half, when the U22 Philippines player threw the ball very hard. The U22 Indonesia defenders were confused, and then Banatao seized the opportunity to head the ball accurately, putting the white team ahead.
Coach Indra Sjafri shared that he had planned very carefully for his students on how to attack and defend long throw-in situations. That was the reason why he was very disappointed. He blamed his students for not listening to his instructions.

"It's a pity that in the long throw-in situation, the players did not do as they were trained in terms of who would mark who," Indra Sjafri stressed.
In the second half, Indonesia increased the speed of attack. The presence of Robi Darwis, Rahmat Arjuna and Toni Firmansyah created a series of attacks. However, Indonesia was confused in the final third of the field, not creating many clear scoring opportunities.
This is another point that coach Indra Sjafri was disappointed with his players. He said: "In the second half, we tried to change players and formation. It is true that we could have controlled the game, but the players could not take advantage of that to create opportunities."
With a 0-1 loss, U22 Indonesia ranked 2nd in Group C with 0 points, ahead of Myanmar in terms of goal difference. The ticket to the next round was assured for U22 Philippines with 2 wins in all matches. U22 Indonesia still has a chance to enter the SEA Games semi-finals as the second-placed team with the best record. The first requirement they must complete is a big win against U22 Myanmar.
