Recently, many parents with children attending the junior high school level at Hiep Hoa Primary and Junior High School have expressed frustration that their children have to attend school on the Hung Kings' Commemoration Day (March 10th, or April 18th) because the school is holding make-up classes so that students can have Saturday (April 20th) off while teachers attend the principal's daughter's wedding.
Hiep Hoa Primary and Secondary School, where students had to attend make-up classes on the Hung Kings' Commemoration Day holiday.
On the afternoon of April 19th, speaking with a reporter from Thanh Niên newspaper, Mr. Vũ Minh Quyết, Head of the Education and Training Department of Vũ Thư District, confirmed that the incident as reported by the parents did occur.
"Also this afternoon (April 19th), Mr. Nguyen Thang Thien, Principal of Hiep Hoa Primary and Secondary School, submitted an explanation to the Department of Education and Training, but the explanation lacked sufficient information as requested by the district leaders. Therefore, we have requested Mr. Thien to supplement it. From now until tomorrow morning (April 20th), Mr. Thien must complete the explanation and submit it here so that we can report to the district," Mr. Quyet said.
Mr. Quyet asserted that forcing students to attend school on a public holiday was against regulations, because the Thai Binh Provincial Department of Education and Training had previously issued a directive instructing schools to allow students to take a day off on the Hung Kings' Commemoration Day.
Regarding the disciplinary action to be taken in this case, Mr. Quyet said: "Currently, we are waiting to receive the explanation and will report it to the district. The district will consider it, and the Chairman of the People's Committee of Vu Thu District will direct the relevant departments. For example, regarding the review of the official, the Department of Internal Affairs will advise the leadership on appropriate disciplinary measures."
It is understood that Hiep Hoa Primary and Secondary School had not previously reported the change in the school schedule to the Vu Thu District Department of Education and Training. For the time being, the Vu Thu District Department of Education and Training has instructed the school to continue teaching and learning according to the timetable on April 20th (Saturday).
On the afternoon of April 19th, reporters repeatedly tried to contact Mr. Nguyen Thang Thien, but he did not answer the phone.
