In an interview with VNA reporters on the sidelines of the 47th ASEAN Summit, taking place from October 26-28 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, senior expert from the Pacific Research Center, Mr. Ei Sun OH, provided an overview of the Summit and the growing importance of Vietnam in the region.
According to Mr. OH, the Conference has achieved remarkable and positive results. In the context of discussions revolving around the new US tariff regime, regional security issues and the admission of new member Timor Leste, Vietnam has affirmed its extremely important and essential role in the bloc.
OH expert affirmed that Vietnam is considered the most dynamic country in this dynamic region of the world. Vietnam's role in ASEAN is currently extremely important, as many other member countries closely monitor and highly appreciate the economic achievements that Vietnam has achieved.
Expressing his impression of Vietnam's target of increasing its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 10% or more next year, expert OH said that the remaining countries in ASEAN are trying to find out the "secret" behind this rapid economic growth rate.
From a developing economy, Vietnam has emerged as a prominent destination for foreign investment in the region.
Vietnam's development experience is considered a typical example and a valuable lesson for countries like Timor Leste - the newest member of ASEAN.
Vietnam has played a very constructive role, reinforcing and bringing prestige to many ASEAN initiatives, OH added. In particular, in the negotiations on a new tariff regime with the US, Vietnam was one of the first countries to finalize the agreement.
This has established a “baseline” for the remaining ASEAN countries to use when negotiating with Washington, and as a result, trade negotiations between ASEAN and the US have achieved more satisfactory results.
Besides, Vietnam is also expected to play a more active role in resolving conflicts, sometimes even conflicts outside ASEAN, in the context of Vietnam's increasingly enhanced position in the bloc.

Vietnam has been working actively with ASEAN to try to resolve a number of regional security issues, including helping to ease tensions between Cambodia and Thailand.
In addition, OH experts said that Vietnam also plays an important role in issues related to the East Sea. ASEAN members all wish to cooperate closely with Vietnam in the coming years, in the context of the region's efforts to achieve some progress in negotiating the Code of Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (COC) in a very short time.
Towards the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 – which focuses on diversity, inclusiveness and sustainability – Vietnam, as one of the fastest-growing members of the bloc, can play a particularly important role.
OH expert commented that Vietnam can become a model in ensuring that the fruits of economic growth are widely spread and benefit all classes in society.
According to him, Vietnam, along with other countries such as Malaysia, the Philippines, and Indonesia, are participating in a healthy competition to attract foreign investment through attractive incentive policies. This is expected to help ASEAN achieve its goals of inclusiveness and sustainability./.
