On December 24th, the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center organized a workshop and acceptance testing of the "Organic Vegetable Production Model with VietGAP Certification" in Phu Long town, Ham Thuan Bac district. The model covers 15 hectares with 47 participating households.
The model was implemented by the Binh Thuan Agricultural Extension Center in coordination with the Farmers' Association and the Phu Long town government from September to December 2024, using provincial agricultural development funds. The goal was to transfer new technical advancements in organic vegetable production through the use of biological fertilizers and pesticides.
According to the assessment of the Agricultural Extension Center, the results after more than 3 months of implementing the model show that households applying the VietGAP vegetable production process focused on using organic and biological fertilizers. As a result, the yield and profit of the model fields growing vegetables such as bok choy, lettuce, and onions were higher than before (average yield of leafy vegetables and herbs increased by 12-15% and average profit increased by 40%). Compared to the permissible limits, the vegetable samples taken (bok choy, green onions) showed no detectable residues of heavy metals, microorganisms such as E. coli and Salmonella, or pesticide residues of organochlorine, organophosphorus, pyrethroid, and carbamate. This indicates that in their cultivation, the households used safe water for irrigation, applied organic fertilizers and biological pesticides, and ensured the required waiting period before harvesting. This results in safe products with high-quality designs that maintain their freshness for longer, earning the trust of consumers.
On the other hand, thanks to training and technical guidance, households have mastered the process of producing leafy vegetables and herbs according to VietGAP standards. Furthermore, they have learned how to keep electronic logbooks and access the list of recommended pesticides for use on vegetables. Currently, the Phu Long safe vegetable cooperative has been certified by the FAO with VietGAP certification for its fresh produce. The cooperative's VietGAP vegetable products are integrated with an electronic information traceability system (QR code labels).
Through this model, soil improvement has been achieved, productivity and quality have been enhanced, and safe products have been produced. The number of pesticide sprayings has been reduced by 2-4 times per crop. Phu Long is known as an agricultural town, with main crops such as dragon fruit, rice, and vegetables. The current vegetable growing area covers over 40 hectares, concentrated in the Phu Cuong, Phu Truong, and Phu An neighborhoods. The town has established one VietGAP vegetable cooperative and one safe vegetable production group.
