On the morning of January 8, the bustling atmosphere of the "7th Traditional Cake Wrapping Competition" filled the Saigontourist College of Tourism and Hospitality.
Banh tet, the soul of Vietnamese Tet, is not only delicious but also a traditional cultural symbol associated with thousands of years of national history every Lunar New Year. With the delicate combination of natural ingredients of sticky rice, meat, green beans and the lush green color of banana leaves, Banh tet not only evokes memories of the homeland but also expresses gratitude to ancestors, the desire for reunion and wishes for peace in the new year.
On the morning of January 8, 2025, the bustling atmosphere of the "7th Traditional Banh Wrapping Competition" filled the Saigontourist College of Tourism and Hospitality. The event was jointly organized by the school, the Saigon Tourist Corporation Limited Labor Union, the Indiana Soybean Alliance (INS) and the US Meat Export Federation (USMEF). With the support of the US Agricultural Associations, the competition has gone through many successful seasons and become a beautiful tradition, contributing to preserving and spreading the value of national culinary culture.
The competition is not only a place for students to test and practice their skills, exchange and learn, but also a journey to connect traditional values, honoring the beauty of Vietnamese culinary culture through the image of Tet banh tet. Each cake, carefully crafted by the skillful hands and passionate hearts of the teams, carries a message of love, sharing, spreading the spirit of mutual love and hope for a full spring to difficult circumstances in society, together welcoming the Spring of At Ty 2025.
The competition gathered 36 teams including 20 Saigontourist student teams majoring in culinary arts, baking, hotel management, restaurant management, tour guiding, etc., along with 16 guest teams and hotel units under Saigontourist Group. The event created a vibrant and attractive playground, with contestants sharing and promoting traditional culinary arts, contributing to preserving and spreading the value of Vietnamese culinary culture to the community.
The highlight of this year's American pork rib banh tet is the wonderful blend of Vietnamese and American cuisine that has created banh tet with a unique flavor, a unique combination of Vietnamese green beans and American pork ribs, fed with grains so the ribs have thick fibers, when cooked for a long time still retain their sweetness and juiciness. Still retaining the original flavor with fragrant sticky rice, rich green bean filling, the banh tet becomes more novel and attractive thanks to the skillful blend with American pork ribs. This combination not only honors the cultural value of the traditional Vietnamese cake, but also breathes into it a modern breath, creating a culinary bridge between the two cultures, both close and unique.
The special highlight of this year's contest is the participation of Miss Vietnam 2024 and the presence of two runners-up, not only bringing a new breeze to the contest atmosphere but also conveying the beauty of traditional culinary culture on Tet holiday of the Vietnamese people, contributing to promoting the country's tourism. The event becomes even more meaningful with the presence of many foreign teams participating, not only bringing excitement to the contest but also contributing to affirming good international relations and cultural exchange between countries.
Following the event, the program "Spring of Love 2025" is a bridge to spread warm feelings, the finished banh tet of the competing teams and meaningful gifts are delivered directly to families in difficult circumstances in Nha Be district. Through the "Traditional Banh Wrapping Competition" held over many years, the school hopes to create conditions for students to learn, become citizens with heart, vision and contribute to society. "Heart" is a combination of love for the profession and a sense of responsibility to the community, helping students not only succeed in their careers but also contribute to building a better society through small but meaningful actions. With a training method that combines knowledge, experience and competitions rich in national identity, the school helps students to be solid in theory, have solid skills, and confidently step into practice.
