On the morning of March 16, Cho Ray Hospital organized a 30th anniversary celebration of kidney transplants and a hospital scientific conference. Dr. Nguyen Tri Thuc, Director of Cho Ray Hospital, said that 30 years after the first kidney transplant, the hospital has performed 1,127 kidney transplants.

The hospital is also a pioneer in implementing solutions to expand the source of donated kidneys, such as: kidney transplants from brain-dead donors (April 23, 2008); from donors with no heart beat (June 18, 2015), cross-donor transplants (January 11, 2017) and ABO blood group incompatible transplants (December 29, 2021)...

According to Dr. Nguyen Tri Thuc, when there is an indication from a patient for organ transplant and an organ source, the hospital will initiate a whole system to quickly obtain organs and quickly transplant them to the patient, ensuring that no donated organs are wasted. Cho Ray Hospital has also coordinated well with specialized medical units, the National Airlines, the Ho Chi Minh City Police, Dong Nai, and Ba Ria - Vung Tau to transport donated organs across the country.

The hospital has also developed liver, heart, cornea, bone marrow, skin transplant programs and is currently preparing to develop lung transplant techniques. To develop kidney transplant resources and create fairness in organ transplants, since 2014 Cho Ray Hospital has established a Human Organ Transplant Coordination Unit. In which, the Kidney Transplant Unit has been developed to become one of the leading kidney transplant centers in the country.

“The hospital has applied many new techniques to improve the quality of treatment such as laparoscopic surgery, robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery in kidney removal, preemptive kidney transplantation (previously on dialysis), transplantation in subjects with high immune risk... At the same time, it has developed procedures in the care and treatment of patients after transplantation,” Dr. Nguyen Tri Thuc informed and said that the hospital also cooperates with many organ transplant centers around the world , and supports more than 10 domestic centers to develop kidney transplantation.

Speaking at the ceremony, Professor, Dr. Tran Van Thuan, Deputy Minister of Health, said that on February 28, 1992, Cho Ray Hospital performed its first kidney transplant with the support of leading professors and experts from home and abroad. Since then, the hospital has focused on developing kidney transplantation as one of the hospital's key points, successfully implementing research on many topics at all levels and having them accepted, making kidney transplantation a routine surgery.

After 30 years, there have been 1,1270 kidney transplants here, including about 70 kidney transplants from brain-dead and heart-stopped donors.

“Organ donation for people with organ failure is a priceless gift. It is not only a noble gesture, but also prolongs the lives of patients who seem to have lost all hope in life. With the spirit of compassion and sharing, many people have decided to donate organs, contributing to changing the lives of unfortunate patients waiting for donated organs,” Deputy Minister Tran Van Thuan emphasized.

On this occasion, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee awarded certificates of merit to individuals for their contributions to laying the foundation for kidney transplants at Cho Ray Hospital.

Will always sing loudly to "repay the debt of gratitude" to life

At the ceremony, People's Artist Minh Vuong said that 11 years ago, he was among the lucky patients with kidney failure who received a kidney transplant. Having a kidney transplant was a "priceless gift" that the 34-year-old brain-dead man had donated to him.

"Minh Vuong would like to thank everyone. If I cannot repay this life, I will repay the debt of gratitude in the next life," People's Artist Minh Vuong said emotionally.

He said that in 2012, Minh Vuong suffered from kidney failure, which caused his legs to swell and made it difficult to urinate. During those days, he had to undergo dialysis, his health declined, and it greatly affected his artistic activities. Organ donation is a noble and honorable act, and he will always sing loudly to "repay his debt of gratitude" to this life.
