Over 1,250 athletes conquered the summit of Pu Tó Cọ mountain and explored the Mường Thanh basin.

VHO - On the morning of December 13th, the Pu Tó Cọ Peak Climbing Race - “Explore Muong Thanh Basin” and the Dien Bien Province Youth and Junior Cross-Country Race 2025 - “Let's go back to Muong Phang” officially opened at the Dien Bien Phu Campaign Command Post historical site.

The event, organized by the Dien Bien Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism in coordination with the Department of Education and Training and the Dien Bien Provincial Youth Union, aims to promote sports training, publicize the Dien Bien Phu Campaign Command Post historical site, and create more attractive tourism products.

The tournament attracted over 1,250 athletes from 60 agencies and units inside and outside the province. Notably, the tournament saw the participation of many athletes from provinces and cities nationwide as well as international athletes.

At the opening ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Hoang Hiep, Deputy Director of the Dien Bien Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, emphasized that the tournament is an experiential journey following in the footsteps of General Vo Nguyen Giap, with the meaning of educating the younger generation about historical traditions, love for the homeland, and also a community-building and sharing activity.

Immediately after the opening ceremony, nearly 600 athletes participating in the Pu Tó Cọ Peak Climbing Competition officially started. The athletes competed in four categories: men's individual, women's individual, men's team, and women's team, covering a distance of 8km.

Along the routes to conquer Pu Tó Cọ peak, athletes and tourists will have the opportunity to experience and explore the beauty of nature and the people of Mường Phăng.

Throughout the competition stages, the organizers arrange activities such as visiting historical sites, experiencing local culture, and participating in cultural exchanges to create a lively atmosphere and attract a large number of people and tourists.

The mountain climbing journey involves passing through numerous shelters and work areas within the historical site, experiencing tunnels through the mountains, following trails under the canopy of the Muong Phang forest, crossing streams, and climbing slopes to the summit of Pu To Co at an altitude of 1,700m above sea level.

With determination, effort, and perseverance, the athletes conquered the summit of Pu Tó Cọ at an altitude of 1,700m - a place that marks the role of the General's strategic observation post during the Dien Bien Phu Campaign.

The Pu Tó Cọ peak climbing competition aims to develop a unique sports tourism product, linking physical training with the promotion of historical and cultural relics of Mường Phăng - Mường Thanh in particular, and Điện Biên province in general.
