As consumers tighten spending

Adjusting spending plans and cutting unnecessary expenses is the solution that many families in the province have recently implemented, facing the pressure of rising prices and fluctuations in work. This has partly made the market gloomy.

Although she was a bank employee, Ms. Tran Quynh Nga, in Vinh Giang commune, Vinh Linh district, was forced to quit her job due to the unit's request to reduce staff. Although she was notified after the Lunar New Year, this still made her sad, and her family's life was affected.

Ms. Nga said that the family's income has now decreased by only half compared to before, while expenses for living expenses and children's education are increasing. Although her husband has a stable income, it is at a low level, and all expenses for the family of three now depend on his income.

“Without a source of income, household expenses must be carefully calculated to avoid the situation of “lacking first, lacking later”. Now, from going to the market to cooking to using electricity and water services... everything has to be cut down. I am trying to apply for jobs in some places but have not been able to. At the age of 40, finding a new job is not easy, life in the future will surely be difficult”, Ms. Nga confided.

As the owner of a fashion store, in the past, the favorable business helped Mr. Nguyen Duc Cuong, in Dong Ha City, comfortably spend and live on daily expenses. However, for nearly half a year now, due to fluctuations in customers' jobs as well as rising prices of goods, the number of visitors to his store has decreased significantly.

“Nowadays, there are streamlining and mergers everywhere, so the customers of the store, which are mainly civil servants and public employees, have reduced their demand for fashion shopping. In previous years, the store's daily revenue was up to several million VND, but this year it has decreased by 70%, there are days when the store cannot sell any products,” Mr. Cuong expressed.

Through this time, he realized the importance of saving in spending. Therefore, he gradually learned how to adjust his spending in the increasingly difficult economic situation; limiting long-distance travel and unnecessary shopping.

Not only Ms. Nga or Mr. Cuong, many families in the province are having to tighten their spending because of the disruption in work causing a decrease in income, while the prices of goods are increasing. In fact, surveys from traditional markets, shopping malls and convenience stores show that purchasing power has decreased since after Tet.

As a housewife, Ms. Nguyen Thi Lien in Vinh Linh district said that the high prices have forced her family to change their eating habits. The increase in pork and seafood prices has made it difficult for me to “design” the menu for my family.

“It is really difficult to cook a meal that is both nutritious and economical,” said Ms. Lien. In addition to the slight increase in prices of some items, which has limited purchasing power, consumers generally only focus on essential food items and the amount purchased has also decreased.

The fact that consumer demand has decreased can be seen as a result of changes in consumer income, especially among salaried workers, who have experienced many disruptions in their jobs. People are forced to change their spending habits, becoming more cautious and frugal in their daily expenses.

Recently, to change their spending habits, some families have used applications to track their income and manage their daily expenses. At the same time, they search for deals and promotions on websites and applications to save money when shopping and using services. At the same time, people also plan their spending every day, to both control their spending and have long-term savings.

It can be seen that, under economic pressure, many families are forced to find ways to maintain their lives. Along with that, spending habits are also gradually changing - from shopping according to preferences to making specific plans, spending only on essential needs; taking advantage of shopping on digital platforms with discounts and promotions. Limiting eating out and prioritizing home cooking has become the optimal choice to save money. Despite many difficulties, each individual and family is trying to adapt.
