PIONEER ON THE ECONOMIC FRONT
Under the hot sun of the red soil of Long Binh, we visited the nursery of Aquilaria crassna seedlings of Mr. Dao Duy Ninh, Secretary of the Long Binh Commune Youth Union. With an area of over 1,000m², this lush nursery supplies the market with about 100,000 quality seedlings each year. At present, the selling price ranges from 6,000-7,000 VND/tree, after deducting costs, each tree makes a profit of 2,500-2,700 VND. Thereby, bringing a stable income to the family and creating jobs for some local youth union members.
Anh Ninh shared: “In addition to work at the office, developing the family economy is also part of the responsibility of each cadre and union member. I find that when we make efforts to do business on our own, it will promote more comprehensive maturity, both contributing to society and being independent in life.”
Mr. Dao Duy Ninh (left cover) started his business by producing Aquilaria tree seedlings, selling hundreds of thousands of seedlings to the market every year.
Starting out as a grassroots union official, Mr. Ninh was troubled when he saw many union members lacking direction and afraid to start a business in their hometown. From his nursery model, he hopes to motivate and encourage union members to dare to try high-tech agriculture , a new but potential direction in the locality.
Also in Long Binh commune, another youth union official, Mr. Pham Hung, Secretary of the Youth Union of Village 6, is gradually affirming his success with the durian growing model. Having been involved in goat farming for a while, in 2020, Mr. Hung decided to switch to growing durian on an area of more than 1 hectare. Many people discouraged him because they thought that durian trees were "difficult", time-consuming, required a lot of investment, and were risky. But with the spirit of daring to think and dare to do, he still firmly pursued the direction he had chosen. "Before, when I grew durian, many people discouraged me. But if I like it, I have to try. If others can do it, I can do it too. If I do it, I have to learn and make an effort to the end" - Mr. Hung shared.
After nearly 5 years of diligently improving the land, learning techniques, and actively monitoring the market, this year Mr. Hung's durian garden has its first harvest, expected to yield about 4.5 tons. This is not only the result of a crop but also the result of perseverance, a progressive spirit, and confidence in his own choice.
SPREAD THE ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT
The start-up stories of Dao Duy Ninh and Pham Hung not only bring economic value but also are authentic and inspiring “living materials”. From there, the Youth Union at all levels in Phu Rieng district has built a sustainable start-up movement, spreading widely to the youth union members.
Ms. Trinh Thi Kim Oanh, Deputy Secretary of Phu Rieng District Youth Union shared: In recent years, identifying start-ups as one of the key contents, the District Youth Union has constantly innovated the way of organizing activities, diversifying propaganda content, and proactively connecting to support young people to access capital, science - technology and market opportunities.
With a progressive spirit, daring to think and dare to do, Mr. Pham Hung boldly converted from raising goats to growing durian, bringing economic efficiency to his family.
Ms. Oanh affirmed: “There are many role models who are key union officials in communes with start-up models to develop family economies. Those models have been replicated among rural union members. Looking at those models, youth union members will learn and actively participate in the union organization to access resources and practical experience.”
At the same time, Phu Rieng District Youth Union also proactively conducted field surveys and coordinated with relevant agencies to implement policies to support young people in economic activities such as: introducing preferential loans, training in cultivation and animal husbandry techniques, opening on-site start-up classes, organizing creative idea competitions among rural youth... Thereby, gradually arousing the mindset of self-reliance and proactive enrichment, especially among ethnic minority youth.
The most obvious effect is that more and more young people are choosing to start a business locally. No longer having the mentality of “leaving home”, many young people in Phu Rieng are gradually building their future right on their homeland, with practical support from the Youth Union. Mr. Nguyen Trung Thanh in village 4, Long Ha commune shared: “Before succeeding with the bamboo rat breeding model, I had worked in many jobs in many places. Thanks to practical experience and support and guidance from the Youth Union, I realized that there is nothing better than trying to get rich in my own homeland. In Long Ha today, many young people have also started successful businesses in their own way.”
AWAKENING THE DESIRE TO SEEK A SELF AND START A CAREER
It can be seen that the common point of the economic models initiated by the Phu Rieng district Youth Union is not the scale or large investment capital, but the pioneering spirit, perseverance and determination to establish themselves and their careers. That is the image of "union leaders" who do not wait for opportunities but create opportunities themselves, turning the sunny and windy land into a solid foundation for themselves and a support for the young generation.
The youth startup movement in Phu Rieng district is gradually forming a sustainable ecosystem with all the necessary elements: model examples to learn from, inspiring individuals, accompanying groups and timely support policies. This is an important foundation to continue to arouse the desire to establish a career in rural youth, thereby contributing to promoting local socio-economic development.
In the context of the countryside changing strongly thanks to the orientation of developing green economy and circular economy, young people have more and more opportunities to assert their role. Models such as the nursery of Aquilaria trees, clean durian garden or closed farm of the Phu Rieng district Youth Union are vivid evidence of the adaptability and creativity of today's young generation.
In fact, many grassroots union officials in Phu Rieng have proactively sought out career paths right in their hometowns, without waiting for favorable conditions. Their effective economic models not only inspire young union members but also serve as a foundation for building a sustainable startup ecosystem, with the support of the union organization and practical support policies. Guided and led by the Youth Union, the youth start-up movement in Phu Rieng district is no longer a temporary activity. Instead, it is gradually becoming a sustainable flow, nurtured by trust, companionship and authentic stories from the lives of grassroots youth.
