On August 20th, the ASEAN Committee in Vienna (ACV) solemnly celebrated the 58th anniversary of the founding of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), with the participation of Ambassadors and Representatives from the eight ASEAN countries with diplomatic missions in Vienna (Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam).
Attending and speaking at the commemoration ceremony were representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Austria, leaders of United Nations agencies and other international organizations in Vienna, diplomatic corps, businesses, academics, students, and the ASEAN community living and working in Austria.
In his opening remarks, Mr. U Min Thein, Ambassador of Myanmar and current Chairman of ACV, emphasized the special significance of the anniversary day, while affirming that ASEAN always maintains solidarity and plays a central role in regional and global cooperation.
The Myanmar ambassador affirmed that ACV will continue to play an important bridging role between ASEAN and international organizations based in Vienna, as well as maintaining relations with the host country, Austria. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim delivered a video message of congratulations from Malaysia – the ASEAN Chair in 2025 – emphasizing the theme of an inclusive and sustainable ASEAN, sharing progress, leaving no one behind, and committing to continue supporting dialogue, confidence-building, multilateralism, for peace , stability, and prosperity in the region and the world.

On behalf of the Austrian Foreign Minister, Hannah Liko, Director General of Political Affairs , Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, sends warm congratulations.
Hannah Liko affirmed that Austria always values its multifaceted cooperation with ASEAN – one of the most dynamic regions in the world – expressed her readiness to act as a bridge to promote the good strategic partnership between ASEAN and the European Union (EU), and stated that Austria will join the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC).
Leaders of United Nations agencies and international organizations in Vienna, including the United Nations Office in Vienna (UNOV), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), and the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), also delivered congratulatory remarks, appreciating ASEAN's role in promoting a culture of dialogue, building trust and cooperation, and contributing to maintaining peace, security, and sustainable development.
Notably, UNODC leaders praised Vietnam's active and responsible role in hosting the signing ceremony of the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime, which will take place in Hanoi on October 25-26; CTBTO thanked Vietnam for the warm welcome extended to CTBTO Executive Secretary Robert Floyd and for the successful organization of the East Asia Workshop on National Data Centers (NDCs).

The celebratory atmosphere was further enlivened by a performance of traditional costumes from ASEAN countries, showcasing the diverse beauty of each member nation.
In addition, guests had the opportunity to visit exhibition booths showcasing characteristic products and enjoy the unique cuisine of ASEAN countries through a rich buffet, contributing to the dissemination of the region's cultural identity.
This year's celebration, organized by AVC in the Vienna International Convention Centre – home to the offices of the United Nations and other international organizations in Vienna – attracted the attention and participation of numerous guests from countries around the world.
Through this, ASEAN countries wish to affirm to the international community a united, trustworthy, and proactive ASEAN, while highlighting the image of a community united in diversity, cohesive, dynamic, and ready to work together with partners for peace and sustainable development.
