Taiwan's F-16V fighters prepare for drills in 2022
The Kaohsiung branch of Taiwan's High Court said the defendant, known only by his surname Liu, had committed crimes related to Taiwan's national security law and spying for China.
According to AFP, the defendant was also convicted of several counts of violating the island's classified information protection law by passing classified military and security information to Beijing. The maximum sentence for this crime is 7 years in prison.
In total, defendant Liu was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the above-mentioned violations, but the court did not provide details about the criminal process because it was information related to Taiwan's territorial secrets.
Prosecutors opened an investigation into the defendant in January on suspicion that he had contacted and "recruited" at least six officers of the air and sea defense forces over eight years to work for China.
Five officers involved in the case received sentences ranging from six months to 20 years in prison, while one was acquitted.
According to the indictment, Beijing approached Liu when the former officer visited China in 2013. From there, Liu developed a network of informants, and paid them through front companies.
