However, learning IELTS is often considered a big challenge, especially for primary and secondary school students, who have limited vocabulary and experience in learning foreign languages.

To solve this problem, the Linearthinking method developed by the DOL English team - former students of the Gifted High School, VNU-HCM - has brought a new approach, helping children learn IELTS logically, effectively and reduce dependence on memorization and vocabulary.

What is the Linearthinking method?

Nguyen Quang Minh, grade 9, Tran Dai Nghia Secondary and High School, Ho Chi Minh City, achieved 8.5 IELTS overall after studying at DOL English.

Linearthinking is a method of learning English thinking, specially designed for Vietnamese people, with a combination of mathematical thinking, super memory techniques and research on the influence of mother tongue on learning English. This method has been researched and developed by the DOL English team, headed by Master Le Dinh Luc, since 2008 and is widely applied at DOL IELTS Dinh Luc Thinking English Academy. Linearthinking not only focuses on improving listening, speaking, reading and writing skills but also helps students practice logical thinking, systematize knowledge and apply language naturally and effectively.

One of the biggest problems Vietnamese students have when learning English is the habit of rote learning, learning tricks or memorizing vocabulary in a fragmented way from a young age. According to PhD student Ha Dang Nhu Quynh - academic director of DOL English and a second-year graduate of English Pedagogy at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education as well as an absolute IELTS score of 9.0 - primary school children are likened to "blank paper" when exposed to foreign languages. This seems to be a disadvantage, but it is a great advantage if they are guided with the right methods from an early age. Linearthinking helps children learn English systematically, focusing on understanding the nature of the language instead of memorizing mechanically.

The Linearthinking method was invited by the Center for Information andEducational Programs (Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City) to share at a training session with 800 primary and secondary school teachers.

Linearthinking not only helps students improve their language skills but also trains them in logical and critical thinking, skills that are essential in an international academic environment. By applying systematic thinking, students are guided in analyzing questions, finding connections between ideas and building strong arguments. This is especially useful in the Writing and Speaking sections of IELTS, where students need to present their ideas clearly and coherently. This method has also been proven effective in solving long and difficult test questions that require high thinking such as English and Mathematics in the recent 2025 High School Graduation Exam.

Conquer IELTS early to increase future opportunities

A special feature of Linearthinking is the approach based on students' personal interests. Master Tran Anh Khoa from DOL English - a second-class graduate of the English Department at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU-HCM and achieved a perfect IELTS score of 9.0 - shared that children, especially those in primary and secondary school, need to be motivated through the things they love.

Linearthinking is designed to suit learners at many levels. For primary and secondary school students, this method helps build a solid language foundation, from standard pronunciation (based on the IPA) to reading and writing skills. For higher level students, Linearthinking focuses on improving reflective and analytical thinking skills, helping to achieve high scores in the IELTS exam.

The Linearthinking method at DOL English was co-researched and developed by Mr. Le Dinh Luc, a former math student at the Gifted High School, VNU-HCM.

Many education experts believe that conquering IELTS early brings many advantages, especially in the context of international integration. For example, Master Bành Phạm Ngọc Vân, Vietnam market director of the New Zealand Education Agency, said that high schools in New Zealand often do not require specific entrance standards, but students with IELTS certificates will have a great advantage in adapting to the international learning environment.

According to Master Nguyen Thao Chi, Head of the Department of Communication and Event Management, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU-HCM, English output standards at Vietnamese universities often require a level equivalent to B1, B2 or higher, especially for international joint programs (minimum 5.5 IELTS). Therefore, studying IELTS early helps students build a solid foundation, ready to meet these requirements.

The Linearthinking method at DOL English is not only a new approach to learning English but also a comprehensive solution, helping Vietnamese students, especially primary and secondary school children, conquer IELTS effectively and sustainably.
