Mr. Nguyen Xuan Bich is still working hard on his handmade signboard painting job.
Mr. Nguyen Xuan Bich shared that he has had a passion for painting since he was a child. In 1985, he opened a billboard painting shop at home. In addition, he also paints pictures and portraits. Inside his small shop, there are still vivid landscape paintings and portraits.
According to Mr. Bich, in the past, the profession of drawing advertising signs was very developed. Hand-painted painters sometimes worked day and night without running out of work. Later, when the line of printed signs, pre-designed templates on computers was born, the traditional signs that he used to draw gradually became a thing of the past. Because in just a few hours, an advertising sign could be designed and printed, while the hand-painted process took several days to complete. Since then, many painters had to change jobs because they could no longer survive. However, after more than 40 years of working with a brush and a palette, Mr. Bich has still diligently stuck to his profession with meticulous and elaborate manual drawings.
Mr. Nguyen Xuan Bich said: “To make a complete signboard, it must go through many stages, from framing, priming the background, dividing the letters, then starting to draw and finally applying the gloss. This work can last a whole week or more depending on the size of the signboard. Although the profession of drawing signs by hand is old, I always want to apply new things to improve the quality of the work. There are cases where I will design a model on the computer using software, then send it to the customer for reference, and only when the customer agrees will I proceed to draw by hand. Advertising boards drawn with brushes make people feel close and real, at the same time each artist also conveys their own unique spirit, depending on the artist's skillful hands, which cannot be mistaken. I think that is the reason why many people still choose to use advertising boards by hand instead of electronic signs with sparkling lights”.
At Ngoc Bich shop, although it is not as crowded as before, there are still many customers coming to order handmade advertising signs. Sometimes Mr. Bich has to try to rush the job for the shop owner to make it in time for the opening day.
Mr. Bich explained: “Most of the people who come to order signs are old customers. Many people ask me to be the main artist, because they think my “good hand” in drawing helps their stores prosper.”
With his passion, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Bich still wants to stick with the job of drawing manual signs despite countless difficulties. He diligently puts his heart into each stroke of the signboards with the hope of introducing people, especially young people, to better understand the memories of the past./.
