According to RIA Novosti, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said on January 27 that Russia urged the US to respond to Moscow's request regarding sending a new Russian Ambassador to Washington as soon as possible.
"Of course, we would like to make a decision on this issue sooner, because in our opinion, the normal functioning of foreign institutions headed by ambassadors is a prerequisite for any form of dialogue. Our ambassador in Washington is absent due to the lack of agreement from the US side, and we do not want this situation," Deputy Minister Ryabkov told reporters.
The previous Russian Ambassador to the US, Anatoly Antonov, left office last October, but so far, no one has replaced him.
On January 20, Reuters reported that Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Federation Council (Upper House) of Russia Grigory Karasin said that the US has informed Russia that it can proceed with the appointment of a new Ambassador to Washington.
Speaking on state television, Mr. Karasin revealed that the new Ambassador could be officially appointed in the coming weeks, however, he did not reveal the identity of this diplomatic official.
