An infertile woman has 11 complex fibroids.

A 40-year-old woman in Quang Ninh recently underwent surgery to remove 11 fibroids equivalent to a 5-month-old fetus. Notably, the patient had a history of infertility and 2 years ago, a uterine tumor was discovered during a check-up.

Recently, doctors at Quang Ninh Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital successfully performed surgery to remove 11 fibroids of various complex shapes and sizes from a female patient named VTM (40 years old), residing in Mong Cai 3 ward.

Accordingly, the patient had a history of infertility, 2 years ago went to the doctor and found out that she had a uterine tumor, irregular menstruation. Recently, she had lower abdominal pain and a lot of vaginal bleeding so she went to the doctor, discovered a large tumor, and was ordered to be hospitalized for treatment.

The woman had 11 fibroids.

Ultrasound results showed that the patient had many fibroids scattered around the uterus. The largest mass was located on the left wall of L4 near the fallopian tube, measuring 79x68mm and L6 measuring 68x39mm, the fibroid at the bottom of L5 measured 51x48mm, with calcification around the edge.

After consultation, the doctors diagnosed the patient with complex uterine fibroids and indicated surgery under endotracheal anesthesia to remove the fibroids.

The surgical team was led by Dr. Nguyen Tuan Anh, Dr. Trinh Thi Bich Thuy - Obstetrics Department, Dr. Nguyen Thanh Cong and technicians from the Hospital's Anesthesia and Recovery Department.

During the surgery, after complex removal of adhesions on the back of the uterus, omentum and left ovary, the doctors successfully removed 11 fibroids of various shapes and sizes. Notably, the patient's entire uterus was preserved intact. The samples sent for testing were all benign.

After surgery, the patient received intensive care in the Gynecology Department, is currently in stable health and has been discharged from the hospital.

Uterine fibroids are a benign disease of the uterine muscle, manifested as a tumor developing from the uterine muscle. This is a very common gynecological disease at all ages, from the reproductive period to menopause or postmenopause. However, recently this disease has become more common in young women.

Regarding the above case, obstetricians and gynecologists advise women to note a few things: If the tumor is small and does not affect the uterine lining, most of the time it will be asymptomatic and only discovered by chance during an abdominal ultrasound, then only regular monitoring is needed. If the tumor is large, pushing the lining can cause abdominal pain, menorrhagia, difficulty conceiving or miscarriage, then the patient needs to go to the doctor for advice and treatment from a gynecologist.

To prevent uterine fibroids, women should: Maintain a reasonable weight, increase exercise, eat scientifically (prioritize green vegetables, fruits, white meat, fatty fish, limit red meat and processed grains). Have regular gynecological check-ups at reputable obstetrics and gynecology facilities. Along with that, controlling stress is also very important to maintain hormonal balance.
