Ms. Shataria Banks planned to fly from Miami International Airport to her home in Houston, Texas, on July 23, a few days after having cosmetic surgery in this area, according to CBS Miami.
She said she had presented a doctor's letter stating she was fit to fly after a "thorough assessment". However, the airline refused to let her board the plane, citing "internal procedures".
Ms. Banks recorded the conversation with a female employee at the check-in desk. In the video, which she provided to CBS Miami, she asked whether the airline had a public health policy for passengers to review before booking.
The employee replied: "We have to follow the procedure," adding: "This is about your safety." According to Ms. Banks, the airline has no written policy for passengers to consult.
"I'm not saying airlines don't have the right to refuse passengers or don't care about safety. But they need to have clear regulations, because not everyone can afford to buy a new ticket," she told CBS Miami. "I would never want to fly with them again."
Ms. Banks did not reveal what type of cosmetic surgery she had, but in the video interview, she can be seen wearing bandages and drains around her abdomen.
In a statement to People magazine, a Spirit Airlines spokesperson affirmed that passenger safety is a "top priority."
They said the staff followed proper procedures and consulted with MedLink, the company's partner providing remote medical support.
"Records show that a MedLink specialist reviewed the medical documentation and concluded that the passenger was not fit to fly at that time for safety reasons," the airline said, confirming that Ms Banks had been "reimbursed for her flight."
