The comprehensively upgraded and rebranded NetApp Ransomware Resilience service enables businesses to integrate their data infrastructure into their overall security strategy by using artificial intelligence (AI) to detect ransomware, while adding two groundbreaking new features: the ability to enable enterprise storage systems to detect data breaches from within; and an isolated recovery environment that provides secure, clean, and complete recovery of the most critical data.

As businesses face major challenges such as AI development, data modernization, cybersecurity resilience, and cloud migration, the need for a secure, reliable, and efficient data infrastructure is becoming increasingly urgent. While AI investments bring new opportunities to businesses, they also increase the risk of cyberattacks. NetApp helps businesses integrate data infrastructure into their overall security strategy, applying AI technology to protect data and minimize the risk of operational disruption.

“To effectively protect data against cyberattacks, businesses need to be able to detect incidents as early as possible so they can respond in a timely manner,” said Gagan Gulati, senior vice president and general manager of data services at NetApp. “With new AI-powered capabilities that help identify early signs of data leaks, combined with our industry-leading ability to detect ransomware on both structured and unstructured data, we are making enterprise data more secure than ever.”

“Storage is the last line of defense to protect our customers’ most valuable assets, data. We are constantly innovating to maintain our position as the world’s most secure storage platform,” added Gagan Gulati.

Notable updates to NetApp's network resiliency include:

NetApp Ransomware Resilience : Formerly known as NetApp Ransomware Protection, NetApp Ransomware Resilience makes it easy, fast, and effective to protect and recover ONTAP workloads from ransomware attacks without requiring specialized security expertise or training.

The new upgraded version of Ransomeware Resilience provides comprehensive ransomware defense, with centralized orchestration per workload, applicable to both file and block storage, all centrally managed on a single platform.

Data Breach Detection : NetApp Ransomware Resilience now includes AI-powered data breach detection to identify unusual user and file system behaviors that are early signs of data leaks or unauthorized intrusions.

When anomalies are detected, the system automatically sends alerts via the customer's SIEM (Security Information and Event Management) platform, while providing digital forensic data to help businesses respond quickly and accurately. Proactively detecting violations early helps NetApp customers prevent unauthorized access and transmission of sensitive data, thereby minimizing the risk of damage caused by cyber threats.

Isolated Recovery Environment : NetApp Ransomware Resilience also introduces an isolated recovery environment, which helps ensure that workload recovery is safe and free of malware. This environment uses proprietary, deep AI scanning technology to accurately identify data that has been affected by malware and when changes have occurred. The system then guides customers through the recovery process step by step, helping them quickly and securely restore the latest data without the risk of reinfection.

These new enhancements further solidify NetApp’s leadership in network resilience, while complementing existing capabilities like AI-based detection built directly into ONTAP.

The award-winning NetApp ONTAP Autonomous Ransomware Protection with Artificial Intelligence (ARP/AI) solution now fully supports both file and block storage protocols. In independent testing and evaluations, the solution has been shown to detect up to 99% of advanced ransomware attacks using full-file encryption with zero false positives, demonstrating the solution can operate effectively in enterprise environments without causing alarm overload.

“NetApp takes a design-in approach to security, positioning its storage solutions not just as the last line of defense against cyber threats, but also as the first line of defense,” said Philip Bues, senior research director for cloud and network security at IDC. “As attacks become more sophisticated, especially with techniques like double extortion in ransomware attacks, today’s announcements continue to affirm NetApp’s leadership and solidify its position as one of the most secure storage platforms in the industry.”

NetApp also announced other updates across its product portfolio today, including enhanced AI capabilities that realize the company's AI vision by consolidating high-performance storage and intelligent data services in a secure and scalable platform.
