Affirming the position of the leading training center in the health sciences sector

Authorized by the President, Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Kim Son awarded the Third Class Labor Medal to the University of Medicine and Pharmacy.

This event was held to review a historical journey and open a new development path to continue affirming its position as a leading training center in the field of health sciences .

Attending the ceremony were Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Kim Son, Member of the Party Central Committee, Minister of Education and Training; Professor, Dr. Tran Van Thuan, Deputy Minister of Health , Chairman of the National Medical Council; Associate Professor, Dr. Hoang Minh Son, Chairman of the Council, Director of Hanoi National University.

Professor, Doctor, People's Physician Le Ngoc Thanh, Chairman of the State Council of Professors in Medicine, Principal of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, said: The University of Medicine and Pharmacy was established on October 27, 2020 under Decision No. 1666/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister, on the basis of upgrading the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, a unit established in 2010. During 15 years of experiencing many difficulties in terms of facilities, human resources and finance, the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy and later the University of Medicine and Pharmacy have always moved forward steadily.

From the initial training scale (2012) with only two training majors (Medicine, Pharmacy) and 100 first-year students, up to now (2025), the school has 6 undergraduate training programs, enrolling more than 1,000 students/year; 30 graduate training programs with an enrollment scale of more than 500 students/year. In the near future, the school will enroll master's training programs for international students and open more doctoral training programs.

The school has also promoted scientific research and knowledge transfer with many national and ministerial level projects and prestigious international publications, contributing to solving urgent public health issues. The University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital in Thanh Xuan and Linh Dam is being invested in and developed strongly, creating a steady step forward in practical training and public health care.

With the results achieved and orientation for the coming time, Professor, Doctor Le Ngoc Thanh affirmed: The school is committed to continuing to be the cradle of training future generations of physicians who are not only solid in expertise but also compassionate, ready to integrate and serve the community, worthy of the trust of society.

Notably, the school has also developed a plan and implemented Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW on breakthroughs in science and technology development, innovation and national digital transformation, promoting the application of AI and Big Data in medicine and biomedicine. At the same time, thoroughly implementing Resolution No. 71-NQ/TW on breakthroughs in education and training development, committing to university autonomy, innovating training programs to train a generation of comprehensive doctors and pharmacists "Virtue-Intelligence-Physical-Beauty".

In particular, implementing the strategic goals of Resolution No. 72-NQ/TW, the school will focus on: training high-quality human resources, promoting the connection between training, research and medical examination and treatment, and at the same time forming and developing a chain of affiliated general and specialized hospitals.

Speaking at the ceremony, Professor, Dr. Tran Van Thuan, Deputy Minister of Health, Chairman of the National Medical Council, affirmed that medical training is not simply about teaching knowledge, but a journey of comprehensive training in expertise, practice, ethics and courage. There is no industry where professional mistakes can leave such serious consequences as the medical industry. Therefore, medicine needs to be trained according to a specific method, where the lecture hall is only the starting point, and clinical practice is the place where "professional training" is formed and honed, where practical abilities and professional responsibilities are formed and honed.

Another reform focus that the health sector is gradually implementing, and that schools need to seriously prepare for, is the National Medical Practice Competency Assessment Exam. Starting from 2027, according to the provisions of the Law on Medical Examination and Treatment, all doctors, nurses, technicians, etc. who want to be granted a practice license must pass the national competency assessment exam organized and implemented by the National Medical Council.

Professor, Dr. Tran Van Thuan, Deputy Minister of Health, Chairman of the National Medical Council spoke at the ceremony.

This is not a “barrier”, but a “shield” to protect patient safety, improve doctor capacity and standardize training quality between facilities, and is a “passport” so that every Vietnamese doctor can practice transparently, professionally and integrate internationally.

The Ministry of Health expects the University of Medicine and Pharmacy to be one of the leading units in reviewing and converting the training program towards competency-based training; Ensuring quality clinical practice at qualified facilities; Involving the University's faculty and experts in deeply participating in the activities of the Exam such as contributing to the construction of the exam bank, assessment system, standards, standardization...

On this occasion, Deputy Minister Tran Van Thuan also asked teachers and students of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy to maximize the advantage of being a member unit in the multidisciplinary and multi-field university system to develop interdisciplinary training models: medicine combined with artificial intelligence, medicine-engineering-biotechnology, smart hospital management, digital healthcare.

The school focuses on developing specialized training programs and international joint training programs to meet the diverse and increasingly complex requirements of medical practice. In particular, it focuses on forming highly specialized postgraduate programs for specialized fields and special specialties.

On the other hand, strengthen the research role of lecturers and students, consider scientific research and innovation as the foundation for developing new generation universities. At the same time, focus on cultivating medical ethics, medical humanities and social responsibility, so that each future doctor and nurse is not only good at their profession, but also worthy of the trust of patients and the people.
